sorry to say, considering all of your recent work, but my gut tells me syncro...or maybe dogsprings, but a bummer either way. your 2nd, 3rd and likely even 4th will have been done in the past but more than likely 5th was decent at that time so it was left. i doubt very much that it is shifter alignment, but i hope it is. one very simple thing you can check is that the shifter gate is on correctly... i only say it because i have found them to be on backwards many times.
    good luck.

    Jim,
luckydynes really knows these trannys. I think he's calling it right.

I'll be surprised if its the 5th gear synchro unless it cracked. I've torn down a couple of 308 transmissions with about 40K miles on them. While the 2nd gear synchro was completely worn out in one & had been replaced in the other, The 4th & 5th gear synchros & dog teeth were in near mint condition, clearances of around 1.5mm - over minimum spec.

BTW, from the 308GT4 thru the 328 the transmission design didn't change significantly. Minor details like the speedometer drive & in '81 the tranny got an internal oil pump is about it.

I drove the car to the golf course this past Saturday....20 minute drive there and back twice. I can get the car to go into 5th NO PROBLEM if i blip the throttle to send the revs to say 2500-3K(guessing) once the clutch is all the way engaged. It just drops into gear without issue. I'm not sure if that is significant or provides any more clues, but that is my workaround for the moment. There are no abnormal noises, smells, etc while driving. The only thing that feels different is when I pull back from 4th to 5th...
I'll get her up on jackstands in a week or so. Got a "Schools Out" party for the kids on Saturday. :)

I think only the Mondi's got the internal oil pump . . . . I have yet to see it on a 308 . . not to hijack but curious if the later 308's did finally get this upgrade 'cause thru '82 they don't.

Some of the racing P car tranny's have the oil pump . .. .great feature for the track . .. hopefully such a box will land in my lap one day.

I think the 4-5 nut loose on a core tranny I picked up earlier in the year that literally stripped the teeth off 4th or 5th. . . I'll post some pics of it . . . looks like 4th and 5th were eating themselves for a while and then finally I think 4th must of engaged while in 5th or something like that . . . serious carnage.
