Yes that part is what I appreciate from his collection. But that seems be the main aspect. They aren't driven. Everytime I saw his cars, they were all shipped in and out. I wonder if he ever drove his fxx. His money/cars so his prerogative of course..hopefully the next owners drive them.
Fux loves cars, no doubt. From a Schumacher F1 to the first Senna delivered in the world. How much 'pull' does that take? There are plenty of people with more money than him, but if he wants a car, he'll get it. Whatever brand, as long as it's the latest and greatest. And usually in a wild spec.
True. He had a bunch of Ferraris at a Mecum auction last year and I considered a couple of them, until I saw the specs. Unfortunately they were a bit wild for my taste. But if memory serves me, all of them had less than 1,000 miles, with most having only a couple hundred.
It's a shame what cars are costing today and whose hands they're going to. It seems like none of these guys are really car people and just collectors, a real car guy wants to use it. I've already put 4000 miles on my 812 in just a few months of ownership and it is the best car I've ever driven. I really cannot get enough of it, I recently drove it houston to austin and back for the weekend and it was such a blast. It's really a shame that the most amazing cars in the world like these laferraris are just going to sit in the garage of wealthy collectors. Obviously everyone is entitled to do whatever they want with their money but these cars were made to be driven and I don't mean to and from parades/cars and coffee.
A little stretch will not afford an F1 over this. The road car F1s that have traded hands the last year went for low 20s with 014 believed to be around the same at the moment (unless it sold since August already). A longtail GTR would be in the teens at best because it's not very streetable. Prior accident history and miles don't matter much (see Rowan Atkinson's 2x crashed car). The only time it really did was last year for #060 that had delivery miles and still in the wrapper. That was mid 20s. The Sultan of Brunei's cars are in horrible condition rotting, but would sell for close to the others as it won't take much money relatively to get them full restored. Kinda like a GTO.
Wow I didn’t know they were going for that much. I wonder what a real F1 LM would bring. There are only 5 of them (and one prototype If I remember correctly)
JS in Chicago bought LM2 for 18 or so in 2013 via MSO (car was in Japan with original owner). It came to the US in 2015 for EPA conversion out in Baltimore at JK Technologies. I was fortunate to see it at McLaren Philly in 2016...it's gorgeous. Ralph Lauren paid 4 or so in late 2004 for LM3 (it was already in the US as of 2003). They would go for over 30 imo (probably insured for more than that). The most expensive F1 is likely 01R, which won the 1995 24 Hours of LeMans. The LM cars are an homage to that (in addition to the other 4 that finished the race). Peloton25 can correct me on any of this and add a lot more useful information if he'd like. The odds of any of the 5 private cars changing hands ever again is slim to none. Your chances are better at buying the entire McLaren organization and taking the prototype you referenced. Edit: The last part is actually not far fetched. I know in the mid 20th century some wealthy individuals would buy movie studios and strip them of films and other prized possessions and then resell the studio later on for the same if not more less those items.
As far as insuring these multi million dollar cars, the most expensive car I've ever insured is this 812 and its not cheap, Im with hagerty, I had other exotics before I insured with state farm till I learned about the whole agreed value side of things and state farm was way less than hagerty. Anyways my 812 insurance STEEP. At the same percentages Im paying are these guys paying 6 figures to insure these $20m+ cars or are there special types of policies? I know Hagerty has policies for cars you're not driving, like I have a few super low mile mercedes, SL500 and 500E in my collection I dont drive and I have parade insurance for the SL500 is $400/year and 500E is $800/year but both are not allowed to ever be driven with that insurance, my 812 has a policy where it can be used and used alot. Even so the parade insurance for my SL500 is $400/year for $40k so 1% so on a $20m car thats $200k a year at 1%......
I honestly don't know, but I wonder that myself. I suppose it's all relative as maintenance costs are also ridiculous, but to them it's nothing just like for my regular car. I know LM2 was driven on public roads after the Amelia Island show in 2017 so surely it is insured for public road use and not just transportation and display. At least from the outside looking in, money does not seem to be an issue for that guy. In addition to LM2, he owns P1 LM2, and another McLaren F1 (chassis #001). From what I've found he also bought the only privately owned McLaren MP4/4 race car (chassis #2) from AH. Has Senna's Toleman F1 car, XJR14 #791 (insane), CLK-GTR #18, etc.
According to wiki: "It has been discovered however, that contrary to the official word from McLaren at the time, only four (including the prototype) of the LMs were originally painted 'Papaya' orange, with two of the three delivered to The Sultan of Brunei being painted black with graphics." The Sultan of Brunei owns T H R E E of the 5 customer LM's ???!!! https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/classic-cars/a30551/there-are-only-six-real-mclaren-f1-lms/
I remember when Hartley Jnr. had #19R & #27R available, both cars had POR on his main site. However, on another site that Jnr. has posted listings, #27R was there having an asking price in GBP that converted to around $20m USD while #19R was still POR. Whether or not it sold for that much, I don't know. #19R appeared to sell first and quickly, then #27R shortly after. I think I recall someone once mentioning that McLaren was offered an incredible amount of money for #01R ($40m+ was the assumed figure) and they quickly shot it down. Other than that, Lewis Hamilton was probably the last person to have a chance of getting a LM under a supposed agreement with Dennis that he had to win both championships in 2008 or 3 titles with the manufacturer (the story seems to go both ways).
THJ has sold a good number of the F1s...I'm curious to know the selling price as well. I'm surprised Lewis didn't buy LM2 before JS did. It was sold via MSO and he had the money. I recall him even taking a photo of LM2 in a warehouse in Japan and posting it on instagram or something. I don't see Brunei parting ways with their F1s anytime soon, but 2 have already escaped. Those being #014 a while back (yellow, now white with high downforce kit) and it was supposedly up for sale for low 20s last summer. #005 was seen in the UK in 2016 and supposedly belongs to the ex Top Gear host that failed after one season. McLaren have parted ways with some important F1s, though, with new management. The longtail GT street car prototype (XP56GT) was sold to a Swiss collection. That collector I think has 5 F1s or so total. XP3 (Gordon Murray's, sold for 20s), 56XPGT, 16R, 25R, and 053. They probably want an LM I take it... I hear they will have their own Clienti program like Ferrari. I can't remember the name of the program. They seem more open to selling their assets, but they need the money more now than before.
I saw there was a red Aperta at Sotheby's. It received a high bid of $5.1M but did not sell since it didn't meet reserve. It was expected receive significantly higher bids than it did.
Also in regards to Fux, I've heard Mecum guarantees him prices for his cars. I'm sure they guaranteed him close to $7m, so if they sold it for $6.1m Mecum would have taken the hit on the sale. That makes sense too after seeing that ad, because Mecum would be interested in a collection in exchange for the Aperta, not Fux
I get these sham emails from some “broker” in FL all the time. F1, 250LM, TdF and .... all on “his” list. No Aperta, but I bet these could all (the higher valued ones) be sniffed out in minutes. Image Unavailable, Please Login
He also owns one of the finest original Countach LP400 extant, formerly my personal 1120192 which I sold to him directly (sorry for the off-topic), an amazing collection.
