This is from an article in the May 2005 Car and Driver. Sorry if this has already been posted, i know that there were rumors going around but this is the first official thing that i have seen on it.

"Manual M5: When we drove the M5 last year, BMW insisted its sequential-manual seven-speed would be the only transmission offered in the 500-hp '06 M5. But in 2007 we will get a six-speed manual complete with clutch pedal for enthusiasts who like to row their own. The new tranny comes primarily as a result of pressure from U.S. loyalists and BMW's North American sales arm that forced the Munich-based carmaker to offer a traditional six-speed manual. The U.S. will be the only market to receive the three-pedal M5 because, as BMW puts it, the rest of the world, where Formula 1 is king, views the sequential manual as the most sporting and advanced option. In our Nextel Cup-loving land, we still prefer the simplicity of human involvement in our fast cars."

Saw that too. Good news. SMG is nice, but nothing beats a good ol manual in terms of feel.

i dont think we wanted manual cause we like Nextel cup, those fans buy mustangs and camaros usually, not M5s.

Whoever wrote that article was probably just pointing out the American markets preference to Nascar over F1. But then again, BMW doesn't have Nascar history and so that whole point (nascar connection) is moot.

Either way, 6spd manual = good move.

Def, its a shame that driving in a large circle is more intresting and entertaining than exotic locations on some of the most famous tracks with RIGHT HAND turns and some of the fastest acclerating cars on the planet. damn hicks.

Would be nice if other companies would listen to what the people want also. Few of us here have contacted Maserati letting them know some of us still want a pedal, But they don't really seem to want to hear it. The thought of BMW going strictly with SMG caused me to give up on them, Well that and the fact their cars are being "Bangled" to death

Despite what BMW thinks, I suspect there will be a lot of envious buys in the rest of the world. I've followed F1 for years and have the utmost respect for the technology, but quite simply F1 =! street driving.

The decision to only supply the US with 6 spd is short sighted IMO. The early buyers will take anything they can get, to be in the new model, but in 18 months time as the initial demand wavers, it will be a different story, particulaly with the interesting styling cues. Look for BMW to release this to the rest of the world at a later stage.
