What a ****ty position to be in. I really feel for you being a business owner myself.

Any other cars for sale, such as Murcielago? Jewelry, buy gold jewelry by the gram? That could actually be a good business idea.. Buy gold in Greece, sell it abroad. I know companies over here have done good money on that.

If I had cash I could get a deal on gold, coins, diamonds etc.
All my money are in the bank, so the only solution is to transfer funds to a merchants account and this means that I will pay a 20% to 30% more he can also be unable to use them due to capital controls.
Whoever has cash at the moment is king.
Druglords, traffickers, pimps, have cash and practically are byuing the country.
Some merchants can even charge your credit card with 1.000 euros and give you 700 euros cash on hand if you are desperate for cash.
    Everything is f#cked up.
    Everything.
    Tommorow is Friday.
I have to pay the weeks salaries to my employees.
I will transfer money from my account to theirs.
They will transfer money from theirs to pay their rent, doctors and other obligations but all of us can just have 60euros per day cash from the atm to live with.
This country was not ready for cap it tal control.
Kiosks, convenient stores, quick markets do not have POS machines and work with cash.
So they are doomed because we do not have cash to pay for what they sell and we prefer to.shop from big stores that can charge credit or cash cards.
And mind you, these pos machines have to be connected to local banks as charging cards by foreign pos is forbidden.
I wish that nobody on earth ever faces this situation.

There is nothing I can say except the darkest hour is right before dawn. Seems like you have no options left to you so maybe the best thing is to do nothing and sit tight and enjoy your family. I will be praying for you and your lovely country and if you ever visit Manhattan then feel free to send me a PM and the dinner is on me.

WOW! Aris, I'm sorry to hear about the situation.. there is always opportunity. I'm sure you will find it.

I presume they will try to push everyone to digital payments technology so they can secure audit measures and taxation.

    Thanks Curt.
It seems that they either want have some sort of control to what is happening on bank accounts.
It appears that people that declared income of few thousands have deposits that are more than a million. We watch the news these days and hold our breath.
One member of the parliament appears to have more than 2mil on a foreign bank and he can not come up with a good explanation on how he got them.
Another has withdrawn 200.000 cash just one day before the capital controls and a former minister appears to be the owner of many off shore companies. He is in jail at the moment and his multiple bank accounts sum up to more than 13mil euros.
This is so f#cked up, that I can not even believe it.
If this is what it takes to fight corruption, then so be it.
I feel sick. I am watching the news 24/7 and feel sick.
It even seems that this alliance government is about to break up, into two or three parties.
One party wants to take us out of the EU, another wants to take everyone from the former government to high court and another says that they will take action, raid the central bank and confiscate the reserve deposits that are supposedly 20 billions and give them to the people.
Never in my entire life have I felt such humiliation and embarrassment.
I am afraid that this will not end nicely.
In the early 70s we had a similar situation that led to the infamous "junta" where the army took control.
Greece was full of trouble for ages.
In 1821 we revolted against the Otoman Empire after 400 years of occupation.
This lasted untill 1897 the year that Crete (island) has also revolted and joined the mainland.
Then in 1912 we had the Balkan war and right after that in 1914 the Aegean islands also joined the new country (santorini, syros, etc)
Right after that we had the genocide where 1.300.000 were slaughtered (total population then was 6.000.000 total) during WW1 and the liberation fight against Otoman epire again.
Then we had our own little civil war (the first one) and right after that WW2 came and right after that a second civil war started, ending in 1949.
Right after that and untill 1960-65 we had a German King(I have nothing against Germans or any other nation) to rule the land and this led to more turmoil and then we had the war of Cyprus with the Turks until 1974 that for the first time we had free elections and democracy by the people for the people.
So we are talking about just 40 years of peace and democracy in this land. (nust keep in mind that the famous island of Rhodes joined Greece just in 1949 - it belonged to the British as a military peotectorate)
I guess we are considered a young country after all these and that democracy needs time to work its way into the hearts of people.
We have to fight corruption, families that rule the land for ages, enemies of the state and the occasional "saviours" that want to take control of the country.
Let us hope that we will act like grown people and pay our debt to whoever we owe, clean up this mess and get back on our feet without another civil war or acts of terrorism as Greece if full of shady idealists that worship rockets and TNT (like the organization 17 November, revolutionary fight, etc).
There is still work.to be done.
But we also have to establish free trade, industry and infrastructure.
And I do.not see how this can work, if we, the simple people that work our guts off pay for whatever fault wars,,corruption and idiot policies led this country to.this state of despair.
    We need help.
    Lots of it.
And right.now what happens here is.not helping at all.
Sorry everyone. I am drunk I guess.
Just needed someone to listen to me.
    Sorry once again.

Aris, here is my new idea. Greece is still a great place and a great place to vacation. Buy a vacation property and rent it out. You can't tell me people are not still going to the islands. Buy a first class beach property and rent for the cost of the mortgage and taxes. The Americans and the Germans are still coming to Greece!

Hm, what if for instance I'd set up a company in another EU country that buys gold. The seller puts the gold by mail to me. I analyze it and based on that I send them cash in return. These type of companies exist over here. Just needs to be a trustworthy analysis of quality and weight of course. The seller can check the process on the web. Would this work? This could quite easily be done and it would generate cash legitimately, which is in high demand.

The prices are insane. Insane as in the million up price insane.
    http://www.spitogatos.gr/gr/πώληση_Μονοκατοικία_Μύκονος__Κυκλάδες_-l2826003?ref=searchListViewLD
Buying something like that needs a loan and no bank will ever fund it in this economy.
Plus taxation for this would also be insane. (in the 200.000 and above tax insanity scale)
Only wealthy Russians seeking for Greek passport can invest that much. The cottage bubble has not burst and will do it soon.

@donv no, bitcoin does not work here.

@flywheel it is forbidden to export gold even by post or any other way. And if you could how would you give money to the seller? Banks will carry with the restrictions for at least a year or untill the haircut of the deposits.

Really this is a lose lose situation.
I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

There is still much more hell comming towards us.

Why would it be illegal to sell your old jewelry within EU? I can't see how they'd be able to forbid that. I would send the cash to the seller in recommended and insured letter.

In order to ship anything you have to declare what's in the box and insure it.
Therefore shipping a gold ring with value lets say 500 euros you will have to pay 20 euros shipping and 30 euros insurance.
Even if you do (and you cant at the moment) you would have to trust the buyer and wait for the cash to arrive.
Cost of shipping and trust make this quite impossible.
Local pawn shops buy with cash small items at fair prices. I do not know where they find cash, probably from abroad.
This is quite complicated to work.

I assume that the problem with bitcoin is that no one in Greece will sell it to you?

Because, otherwise, it's perfect-- and exactly what bitcoin was created to do.

However, I am not surprised that anyone in Greece with bitcoins won't sell it for euros in a Greek bank.

Patek Philippe watches if you can get your hands on them. You could maybe even negotiate a small discount if you buy a couple. They hold their value extremely well. Make sure you get all documents, warranty cards etc. Good luck, I really feel for you. This is a tragedy for people like you.

If you were in Greece and had a Patek Philippe (or an inventory of them), would you sell it for euros in a Greek bank?

Not cash, which is an entirely different equation...
