Walter - Thank you for this information.
Joe - yes I found this car on the Motorcar Gallery website.

I realized the "non 5000 standard" engine on the fotos, but did not know this engine was originally factory delivered.

Though I like the Frua bodywork, the "disco" interior as well as the "Mexico engine" do not make the car to my favorite. As you know I prefer to keep my cars as original as possible and for this reason I have to agree with Ivan: "this interior does not work well".

Thank you all for your inputs.

    Ivan,
I suspect you came to the same conclusion re your white/black Vignale. It would have looked great in navy blue or gun metal grey (my choice) with tan, red, maroon or cuoio leather. Anything but White/Black.
But being such an important car I am sure you were compelled to keep it original, as I would have done.
I totally agree with your comments re the Italian designers. What makes Italian designers great is that they are not afraid to take risk. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it is a complete disaster.
Re the suede interior it is very different, and for that reason, I kinda like it.
We all have different likes and dislikes.
Just my 2 lira, which we may see again :)
    Ciao,

I agree with FGM- as we should not forget that this interior design was very eccentric for that period when the word "disco" was not known at all. "Club" would have been the correct description.

At that time the car was made this kind of interior was very hip and fancy. We should respect that and see this car and its aura as a document of the period it was made and came from. and -btw- this we should do with all classic cars.....

I happen to agree with both of you as I would never destroy an original interior, especially on a rare car like this one. I was joking about changing the color combination and "improving" the interior. I must say that having seen the car in person ... that interior is butt ugly! It just does not do anything for me.

I believe the car is for sale. I may have enquired about the price a few years ago. At that time the asking price would make it about as expensive or more expensive than any 5000GT sold at auction at that time. Of course I do not know what a 5000 GT might bring at a private sale. There is a book "Maserati 5000 GT, A Significant Automobile" by Maurice Khawam that I own a copy of and cannot now locate that has many pictures and much information about this series

The book by Khawam is not a good source for researching the history of the 500GTs and outdated.

As this is a Frua-design it will be significantly more valuable as the standard Alemanno-version although it doesn`t have the "true" 5000 GT engine installed.

Personally I like the Touring- and the excentric Ghia-version most, the latter still lost in space.

I'm still researching it! But the Innocenti clan seems to have their assets and 'stuff' in general spread all across Italy and no one is sure where much of anything is located.....

I collect 5000 GT pictures for fun. I have some troubles with the Monterosa version. How many were built ?

In some listings, 103.006 and 103.012 are Monterosa version.
Sometimes 103.006 is describe as a Touring version...

What about 103.090. It is a Touring version from 1965. I have read that it was 103.010 Touring restamped for Prince Abdel Majid Bin Saud.

    Where is the truth ?

the 5000GT #018, with coachwork by Ghia was sold by Innocenti after a 1-year ownership in 1962 to its 2nd owner in Turino, Italy.
In 1965 it was sold to its 3rd owner in Milano, Italy.

From then on the car disapeared!

    Hi guys

First of all, lovely thread, thanks for all the info!

I've lurked on FerrariChat for a while. I need to ask a few things here and I hope some of you are kind enough to help if you are able, please :)

Does anyone know if Basil Read still owns 103.004? If so, I might be able to get around to see it, maybe even get pics (although I'm not sure about this, I am willing to try!) Edit: It would appear that Basil Read is no longer around. Does anyone know the whereabouts of the car now? Is it possibly still in South Africa at all?

As for the help I humbly ask, do any of you have information that you are able to share with me about which engine & gearbox option were fitted to which chassis? I am compiling a database of technical specifications of all cars ever made by mainstream manufacturers and I have decided that the Tipo 103 should be dealt with in greater detail than I currently do, and I'd like to list each chassis number with the correct technical details. Any help whatsoever at all would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Zak (in South Africa)

    Zak,
#103.004 left South Africa in the 1976.
After various owners it was auctioned in March 2003 by RM and is still located in the USA.

The car was fitted with an original but re-tuned 450S engine, carburettors and 4-speed gearbox!

    saw it here:
    Autoservice Mauro Capuozzo

quite sure it is not a dealer but a repair service.
have seen the 5000GT standing around there for some months.
They seem to service a lot of Maseratis here in Berlin.
Saw some Sebrings, Khamsins and others in his rooms before.

Quite certain it is not for sale, but why not ask directly

The car appears to be in one of those glass boxes for rent. People rent them by the month or year and can store their car in one of these. Anytime they want, they enter a keycode or use a real key and the rear glass doors open and they can drive away with their car. Something like a public garage but the car is contained within a glass enclosure and at the same time it is open to the public for viewing.

There was one such place in Berlin and another in Stuttgart.

    And another in Düsseldorf.

    Formerly Meilenwerk, now Classic Remise.
The cars are parked on metal sliders and are being moved electronically when the owner or whoever wants to take it out as there is only one exit/entrance i believe.

Quite nice but i guess quite expensive at least thats what the cars parked there suggest.

Today there were a Bora, Indy, 3500GT, Mexico, 2 Vignale Spyder and the 5000GT

    heh nicely said OFFtrack :)

I've only been to Meilenwerk twice, quite impressive! It would be fun to stay at the Hotel there as well, sleep in the V8 engine-bed :) cheesy but fun!
