I'm not the expert, but I don't think any 5000GT's were bodied by Vignale.
There was for many years a rumour that a 5000 GT Spyder was made by Vignale. This rumour came from a darwing from that period. Until today the existance of such a car -or a coupe- made by Vignale can NOT be confirmed. I very much doubt the existance of a Vignale-version of the 5000GT! Ciao! Walter
The "Indianapolis"-car was a standart 5000 GT by Allemano. The "5000 GT Le Mans" is also a standart Allemano. Perhaps this might be the #066 as this car got the engine fitted that was once in one of the LM-prototypes. Can you post those ads here? Are they with a photo of the car(s)? Ciao! Walter
Many thanks. I believe that this names of race circuits are PR-names! They were not special versions! Ciao! Walter
This is the ad (dated 1966) about the supposed Maserati 5000 Vignale. The text says: "Some of the models that AUTO PARIS S.L., general distributor for Spain, displays at the Barcelona Motor Show". And just above the photo of the Vignale prototype one can read: "Maserati 5 litros motor V8 carrozado por Vignale"; in english: "Maserati 5 liter V8 engine bodied by Vignale". Originally no 5000 GT rolled out of the Factory gates fitted with coachwork by Vignale. If this is a 5000GT then it was/is the car that went to Mexico first as an Allemano, crashed there, was sent back to Italy for repair and was fitted THEN with this Mexico-Body made by Vignale! For sure its a confusing info on this ad - but I found some of those stating cars without mentioning ALL coachbuilders that had been commissioned by Maserati. Ciao! Walter
hi -- Walt. dont you believe the story that the Vignale Mexico prototype was renumbered with the Mexican 5000gts Chassis number to avoid the mexican taxes? For sure this Vignale car is no 5000? I think, but then I havnt seen the car.. This story I posted earlier in this thread.. Nik
Nik, I have my doubtst about that "5000GT-becomes-a-Vignale-Mexico"-story to be honest! The 1st owner in Mexico had all connections and possibilities to get the car back to Mexico without paying any tax. And if the car -with that VIN- had already been delivered to that country prio to its crash there -of course with a custom carnée- why should this official document become invalid prior to its return from Italy after repair?? It still stated the original VIN! Strange circumstances to say at least! ......! Ciao! Walter
Back from the Desert Concours Classic in Palm Springs last weekend. 5000 GT 014 was there as well as a 6CM. Lots of photos of both but you'll have to scan the entire set. http://www.flickr.com/photos/24302083@N05/sets/72157614736599886/
Hey guys, thought I would chime in and add a few data points to the 5000 thread, and Walter I really appreciate your efforts with the histories of the Vintage Maseratis. I owned the white 1963 maserati 5000 serial number 034 for a while, this is the ex Marcel Leclef that was with Jerry Wood which he took to Pebble Beach in 1999. I bought it from Jerry and the car was very good cosmetically but in need major engine work, which I did with Rod Drew. Incredible engineering on these cars, the way the engine is detailed and finished internally is really amazing and it was truly a super car of its day, and upon acceleration can spin its wheels in second gear while going 50 miles per hour down the highway! Quite scary due the fact that the chassis is a 3500 and has zero corning ability. During the restoration I by chance befriended the daughter of the Mr. Leclef and heard the stories of his passion for driving the car from Begium to Switzerland for his annual particapation in olymipic bobsled competitions. His was one of the longest single ownerships and continuously driven Maserati 5000 ever. Mr Leclef sold the car in 1992 after almost 3 decades of ownership. Unfortunatly I had to let it go and it now sits in a large collection of 100 cars and has not be driven since! I own 1967 Maserati Mexico 4.7 liter serial number 112/1 032 that was sold new to Paolo Di Portanova a well known actor from Rome in the 1960's appearing with Marcello Mastroianni, and the car still has the dealer sticker on the windshield. Walter, if you have information on this car I would greatly appriciate any leads that you could offer. I have never contacted the Maserati Archives, how does one do this? Chris Rose
Chris, many thanks for your notes about #034. Yep, a 5000 GT in turns is a real handfull...! Also many thanks for the infos about your Mexico #112.1.032. Signore Portanova was not an actor (to my knowledge...!). His full name was Count Paolo Apuzzio di Portanova and he was a blueblooded nobelman from Rome/I. But in the 60ies everything was possible in Rome (like in Berlin in the 20ies when almost every 2nd doorman was an ex-count from Russia!). Unfortunately I do not have anymore significant infos about that car. When did you purchase the Mexico? Ciao! Walter
This past August the latest addition to Pebble Beach concours evidently was a failure. Regardless, the T. Coady brought his Monterosa 5000gt and another person brought a Alemano 5000gt. Anyone know what this new class was all about and why it failed?
Have everyone a picture or history from 103.024 ?? Are the back up lamp from 103.058 original ?? Best regards Image Unavailable, Please Login

Nico, unfortunately I don`t have a pic of #042. But it was displayed in Pebble B. in 1999. Perhaps thee is a source on the Net with photos of that event. Ciao! Walter
Thank you I found a photo. I have a lot of pictures from 103.036. Are you interested ? Best regards Nico
For many years #042 had the chassisnumber-tag of a .....Tipo 250F! It was chassis #2525! Two years ago the original chassisnumber-tag came back into the 250F. Ciao! Walter
