#0672MDTR. The car had all sorts of engines installed, a Ford V8 included. The present is #1437GT coming from a 250 GT PF Coupe.

As a former owner, perhaps I can add a bit of history to this car, which is one I really wish I’d kept.

It was one of two TRCs built with 2.5 liter engines for John von Neumann, at the time the West Coast Ferrari distributor (the other was 0680 MDTR). Both used engines from the 625 LMs Ferrari built for LeMans in 1956. 0672 was raced as a 2.5 in 1957 by Von Neumann and Richie Ginther on at least one occasion. While von Neumann had more than one 250 TR in 1958 (0704, 0710), he still frequently raced 0672.

Between the 1958-59 seasons 0672 was allegedly fitted (briefly) with an 860 engine, although no real evidence exists to prove this. It was fitted with a 250 TR engine (0750) at this time and during the 1959 season von Neumann and Gither continued to race 0672 against the “real” 250 TRs.

von Neumann lost the Ferrari distributorship in a divorce (and most of his race cars), but kept 0672 and continued to race it. It was eventually sold (in 1960?) to Otto Zipper, who employed Ken Miles to race it.

It passed through several hands, and at one point (as noted above) was fitted with a Ford V8 drivetrain for drag racing. When I bought it 0672 was pretty much a hulk, but I was able to acquire some of the missing parts (including a TRC transmission) and an 860 engine. I had begun the restoration when the car was affected by a divorce for the second time, and it ended up in England, and then under Swedish ownership, and then eventually through a German company to Holland and Charles Zwolsman. It was auctioned by the Dutch government after Zwolsman's assets were seized, and Bruce Meyer (note correct spelling) bought 0672 and corrected many of the errors which had been made in the European restorations. Meyer (who also owns a 275 GTB/4 and a great collection of classic hot rods) is Chairman of the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles -- certainly among the best car museums in North America. Bruce knows that 0672 belongs in the United States, where almost all its racing history was made, and is the best possible owner for the car -- among other reasons, he’s quite willing to take it out and drive it on the road.

It’s a great car with a great history, and I’m glad to see it in his hands.

The Petersen was one destination I missed on my recent trip. I turned left (east) too soon! They like art cars there.

So Cal must have been something, back in the day. Thanks Old Guy!!

Great information Old Guy! Modern Ferraris are great, but they all lack the history surrounding vintage cars. Every vintage Ferrari has a certain story that sets it apart...Past owners, races, different locations, etc...

    Pretty amazing to think about!
