Does anybody know anything about the 1974-76 Ford Elite? Any advice on purchasing or restoring? Any ownership experience? I am asking for a friend who wants to buy one and restore it. Thank you in advance

    Tell him: "Don't do it."

A childhood friend had a Buick Wildcat - '63, I think. Just cherry & one his pop found found 2 states away, fer chrissakes! He decided it wasn't right for him, but a "cruiser" was, so, one of his sisters got it. He got a Ford Elite. Idiot with 1 hot sister.

it was called the Ford Grand Torino Elite. It was neither grand, nor elite, but if you like Torinos I guess it was okay.

Almost without exception, the collectibility of American cars went into the toilet with the 1973 model year. Some would say it ended in '72.

The next collectible cars come in the late '80's.

A 76 Elite is a garbage barge that you will pour money into endlessly and have zero return.

Go buy a '70 Monte Carlo with a big block V8. That is a cooool ride that might have some appreciation.

    Thanks, I'll tell him.

  7. My brother was given one. We took chisels and a hammer and beat off the roof of it. Made a convertible out of it. It wasn't a bad car, but they really don't have much value if you are buying it to restore. I sold it for $50.00 so we did make money on it though.

My dad had a 1974 Elite, but it was made by Lotus. Very funky looking, & it was an ok car. Typical British quality found in the '70s, which was not great.

Wasnt the 70's Gran Torino the red car with the white stripe in Starsky and Hutch ? I always thought that car looked pretty cool :)
Funnily enough I have never seen one in real life.

Hey..that is a good looking Elite in the pic. Nicely restored or a low mile original.

Ah yes, the Ford Elite. My wife had one in high school when I first starting dating her. A 6000 pound road sled with really poor driving characteristics, unless you really dig the numb feel of mid 70's American sleds. The back seat is pretty roomy for a 2 door ;) ! The car can drive over 10 miles with no water in the radiator, and the 351 Windsor motor is pretty reliable. I would not pursue it as a collectible, but with 24-26" rims and some pumpkin metal flake paint you can cruise the hood in relative safety.

I remember when they first came out, they were considered very nice!

I was about 14 when my dad and I drove to the dealer to buy one, my dad's had the factory alloy rims, they were pretty nice. My dad liked it more than my mom's Cadillac.

I guess our tastes have changed!

My dad had it for about 3 years, I remember his only repair was $13.00 to have a window adjusted. He offered it to me when I was a junior, but I was driving a TR6 so I passed.

A friend of mine bought it and drove it for about 5 years and never spent a dime on it.

I guess they were not so bad!
