I have this car in my shop right now. It had a really good oil leak for the cam covers. Once I removed the covers, I found that the o-rings that seal the chain cover to the cam cover have been cut. I assume this was done to aviod removing the timing cover from the engine. This was done by the dealer. I have also seen this same practice with the 348/328 car to avoid removing the camshafts during a major service, also performed by the dealer.

Now my question to you experianced older v12 guys. I have NEVER had the front cover off of one of these engines. Have have done a bunch of other work to the car with this engine but have never really jumped in this far. I'm not in the least bit scared of it.

What I would like to know is, how much time is involved in removing this cover? Are there any tricks to doing this in the car that I should be awear of?

    Tom,

If it's just the top "O" rings that you need to replace then they can be replaced with the engine in "situ". All you need to do is slacken all the nuts that secure the front cover and very carefully prise it away from the heads - it only has to me moved about a millimeter.

Done loads of these in the past, the only risk is when disturbing the front cover you could introduce other leaks, but you've nothing to loose.

I don't think I've ever serviced one with an O ring that wasn't cut. It's the same on 400/Daytona etc etc

They don't leak if they have just the right amount of silicone applied and all other leaky places are tended to.

You need to do the "shim in the slot as you assemble it" trick, but it's quite easy.
