While I'm in Chicago at the FMI show, my wife takes the 745i BMW out someplace and it catches on fire. I've had it for 2 1/2 years and it's been in the shop for 4 of those months.

My son was following her, noticed the black smoke coming from under the car and call her on the cell. She said he must be kidding when she looks up and see black smoke coming out from around the hood.

I guess the last time in the shop they were so pissed their trying to kill me now???

Holy crap! I've heard a lot of horrible things about the reliability of the 7 series, but never heard of one going up in flames... Hope everyone's ok. Do post an update when you find out what happened though. I'd be interesting in hearing about it.. only guy I know who had one got rid of it for a Maserati coupe. Said the 7 was always in the shop with electrical problems. Go figure!

WOW John, I couldn't believe it had to read it twice, unbelievable. Thank God your son noticed the problem, all my friends that got the new 7 series are having problems but nothing of this magnitude. I remember you telling me that that car was giving you problems but this is too much.
Best wishes to you and your family,
    Oscar

You might want to put some pressure on the executive suite there. Maybe they'll hook you up with the new M5 when it comes out (if you could stand another BMW after your experience; i had the older series, a 740i Sport, 2001, and it had nary a problem, was a good size and decent performance for a big sedan, and just could not fall in love with the new 7's). One of my partners was one of the first to get a new seven, and perhaps one of the first to get rid of it, too-he's now driving an e55. I'm still with BMW as a daily driver- i love my M3, but its sort of the last one they haven't screwed up (yet). Still, the new M5 does have some appeal.

Hi Oscar, thanks guys for concern, everyone is OK as there is apparently something in the engine compartment that when it melts, somehow stops the fire. Anyway, the engine compartment is a mess and I haven't seen the hood as yet. It will be at Princeton BMW tomorrow.

Oscar, you know some of it, but I've been to Corporate and they made a dozen promises, but, you know how it goes. Anyway, this last time it was in they replaced everything, all relays, computers and the complete dash. It was actually working OK this last three weeks, but then this. Maybe one of the new computers burned up. The damage is at the back of the engine and firewall.

Whart, I had a 1999 740i M-class (Sport). I was a great car with great looking wheels, still my favorite. That car was a good one. The new M5 is an attractive fix, but I need a bigger car. I was supposed to get out of this current lease with a new model this fall, 5 months before the lease end, but now??

    I'll let you guys know.

    John

Hi John, glad to hear that everyone is OK. BMW owes you and I'm sure with some pressure on your part they will accommodate you after what happened. I really don't think that they will have the stomach to refuse you anything.
    Best of luck,
    Oscar

BMW bought back over 700 "7" series cars last year. Due to a miriad of problems. People had to sign agreements saying they would not discuss the settlement with others. These cars are being resold at BMW dealers with a branded title showing them as "buy backs". For some reason they are being deeply discounted. Imagine that............. The dealer I used to work for ended up buying back 14 of the 700 last year out of about 60 that they sold during the year. I worked with BMW for 17 years and am deeply disappointed to see this happening to them. I always loved the "7" car and I still drive a 325 even though I work at Audi now. After leaving FoDallas, where I worked for three years, I could have gone back to BMW but chose not to because of all the electrical and electronic quality control problems they are having. Not to mention the Chris Bangle Design School......................................

I didn't lemon it (came close), but gave up on my '97 M3 that I traded it on a Lexus after 5 months of ownership. BMW called me on the following Monday to buy the car back. Whoops.

I'll never get another BWM again. My dad said the same thing after his '73 2002. Should have listened to him.

Talked to BMW today. Here what happened, of course they say they can fix it.

The main bottom radiator hose blew (ask them how that could happen). Anyway the coolant went out so fast the car didn't have time to react and warn the driver??

The coolant went all over the engine. As the coolant is a bit slippery, the front belts started slipping. As they slipped, they heated up. As they heated up they began to smoke and came CLOSE to burning, but only melted.

Have fun trying to find something to believe!

BMW has a quiet buyback on these pigs...tell them go ahead and fix it, but you want out. total up time in shop since delivery, miles, etc. If they don't play, tell 'em to pound sand, and invoke "Deceptive trade practices act"

I have owned 9 BMW's in the last 6 years, currently have 01 750iL bought after I drove E65, decided it was the ugliest and most annoying POS ever to issue from BMW. Bought last new 750iL I could find for the wife. 30K miles later, still looks/runs great. Also have 01 Z8, and 03 Works S Cooper. I have spent a bundle with BMW, and they make NOTHING I would own now. I'm 1st on the E60 M5 list, have been since I picked up the 1st e39 M5 in 99. NFW will I take it. I have seen 10-12 E65-66's in the service dept @ once, and the damn things are piled up like cordwood at dealers. Local store has 760 on floor for 4 months? Get out, now. Run to Lexus/wherever, but punch out.

Sorry end to a GREAT company. C&D just called the 645 cabrio an IROC for rich guys...LOL.

    Hey John,
I also think its time to get out. Sfumato is 100% right, till 2000 all I drove is BMW, but what they have done since and the horror stories I hear now I'm glad I sold mine. I see no reason to keep that car even if they fix it.

Tell them you want out of the car.

    Period. End of story.

That's garbage. E65s, ESPECIALLY '02s are notorious for being highly problematic cars. They make '88 XJ6s look reliable.

As others have said... I own an E38 and won't part with it. I'm actively seeking out its' replacement (Imola Red '01 740i Sport) but since it's worthless (I now drive a high-mile 97 740iL) we're going to make it a project :D

Anyways, get out of that car. Period.

For what it is worth BMW has gotten a lot of the bugs out for th 04 model.
I had a 02 745i couldnt stand it being in the shop so i traded it in for a new one. new one has been very reliable. Also had a m5 that melted its clutch in week (literaly). But my m3 never had a problem and the 99 323i we purchased for my mother in law was never in the shop outside scheduled maintenace(4 years+) Go figure? Seems the cheaper the beemer the better the reliability???

I really do not know why I always keep one in my stable? But I do still prefer them over the other german sedans. They have a spirit to them that the others MB,AUDI etc still seem to lack..
I am strongly considering trading my current 745i in for a 4porte for this reason.
