Seeing more and more -8's at work. Just worked at short haul Cathay Pacific -8 from YYZ to JFK. Seeing a lot of the Atlas and Cargolux -8's as well. Good to see so many of these beauties taking to the skies....Keep up the good work Lou!

Talked to Boeing today. It took a few calls and transfers to get to the right department. Apparently this isn't something they do on a normal basis anymore. Everyone was very nice and shortly after hanging up I got a call back asking me how many crew members. Looks like they'll have some keys for us. I'm really excited about it, even if it was my doing.

They should be able to jet some out of scrap in 15 minutes.

Found this shot on the web. I really like it. Apparently it was taken from a helicopter. I'm trying to get ahold of the photographer to use it in our LAX office. I really love the old with the new, and how the colors of the two are similar. Also like the long shadows.

Heading up to Seattle Tuesday afternoon. Getting excited to fly again. It's been over 3 weeks.

The weather guessers say that we will have rain all this week but some days will be spotty...meaning a hole in the clouds a few times. I don't think that the paint will wash off your airplane if it is raining, Boeing finally figured out not to use water base paints.

When each of these aircraft was new, it was state-of-the-art. Shows what 75 years of progress looks like.

Yeah, nice rain. We have a crew of 3, plus 3 passengers. A dispatcher and I believe 2 mechanics. 2 more staff will stay until after we depart and catch a commercial flight back. I believe they'll be videoing us and was hoping for a little sunshine...

The latest report says there might be some thunder storms, too. So, if the photographers are quick they can shoot when the lightning strikes.

Finally saw one of your -8's last Monday over by the cargo section. Good looking airplane but I like your old ANA style colors better.

I don't know too much about Seattle weather. I sure didn't think snow was in the forecast. But some did fall. Enough to cause us to de-ice before the morning flight. I believe it caught Boeing off guard as well as they only had one de-ice truck for us. And de-icing a 747 takes quite awhile. We ended up departed about an hour and a half late.

Here's a view from the ramp, waiting to go.....

Being a couple hours late brought sunshine on the departure....

We took off to the south and turned right back to the west soon after departing.

Landing weight was REALLY light, 473,000 lbs. Compared to our typical weights in the 700,000s. So flaps 25 was used. There are 2 landing flap settings, 25 and 30. I've only ever done flap 30 landings in the -8 so far, as we're usually close to maximum landing weight. The landing was OK. Not great, not bad. It was actually pretty rough on final for the last 2000 ft. Typically a wind down the runway (34L) in Narita doesn't cause too much turbulence. Wind was around 10 - 15 kts. The 747's a "kite" when it's light. It's way easier to land it when it's heavy. Airspeed varied quite a bit on this approach. We came in at VREF + 10 kts, as opposed to VREF + 5. This was for the turbulence. So the approach is a little flatter. Around 100 ft the airspeed was probably 5 kts faster than that. I went to idle around 100 ft as I didn't want to float (light airplane). Around 50 a slight pulll. And a few more slight pulls closer to the ground. No autobrakes were used. At heavier weights, we always use them to help stop the airplane soon after touchdown. Autobrakes have a tendency to make the nose drop as they start to grab. Without autobrakes, you can just keep the nose "high" in the touchdown position for awhile if you want. I like to do it. Reverse wasn't used. Just reverse "idle". Reverse idle is when you pull reverse, and the reversers move, but you don't pull any more. So the engines don't spool up.

I've watched the video quite a few times now and wish I had flared jsut a bit more at the end. I wish I had a video from the cockpit to show what it looked like from our perspective. And how much the airspeed moved during the approach.

Boeing took us on an amazing tour of the factory. The 747 in these pictures is actually one of ours. RC525 is the frame number. I'm not sure what tail number of ours it is yet, but will have to look it up. I believe it should be finished in June. I really look forward to flying this one after seeing it in pieces.....

It was great being in the "green" cockpit

My thanks to EVERYONE at Boeing for making such a great plane......
