Video taken by Captain Sreekumar from the cockpit of a Boeing 777 at 33,000 ft of a Boeing 747 at 35,000 ft overtaking a Boeing 737 at 37,000 ft.

    - Video shot over Baghdad.
    - The 747 is a -8
    - The B747 is Boeing's fastest commercial jet. It has a cruise speed of Mach 0.855 (570mph = 918km/h) and top speed of Mach 0.92,
which is very close to the speed of sound. In comparison, the Boeing 737 has a cruise speed of Mach 0.78 (511mph = 823km)

Yeah, nice video. While the 747 Classic will go straight to .92 without a shudder, the 400 doesn't like to go above .89. Mach buffet starts around .89 and is very noticeable I'm in the buffet here trying to get a nice ground speed.

747-8 has a large amber band on the top end approaching the barber pole. Especially if you're above optimum altitude. The autothrottle won't let you fly into this area. Even with the autothrottle disconnected, speed protection is active (low and high speed). This picture is a bad example, but it's all I have right now. We are below optimum, so the yellow is quite small. Still, the speed commanded is 331 and the autothrottles won't allow it. So about .875 is all you get. No Mach buffet yet. At light weights and low altitudes, I'm sure you can fly faster, but we typically don't operate at those.

Sheez, 3 commercial jet aircraft all on basically the same heading each spaced only about 2K feet from one another..... isn't that kind of a little close ??

Pretty common from what I understand. The experts here can elaborate.
I have seen converging traffic many times in clear weather, not too far below me.

With all the space in the world, the 748 decides to cut between two large commercial jets with a 2k ft equidistant gap...lol. Pretty awesome shots.

Back when the war in Afghanistan was going full force there was a corridor a few miles wide that came in from the Indian ocean for all variety of traffic. At the time I was going in and out a few times a week and you would see a really cool variety of aircraft. Lots of B-1s and tankers coming in from bases along the gulf and fighters from a carrier parked just offshore. Pretty cool stuff and maybe one of these days I will dig up some pics.

If I wasn't leaving on a trip tomorrow morning I would dig the hard drives out. It also takes me a while to find good pics as I would take a few thousand pics a month while over there.

I remember some years ago being in a holding pattern over West Point Lake in western GA waiting for a thunderstorm to clear ATL. I saw a 727 in the pattern, I guess 2k feet below us, and on every circuit, there it was! This went on for nearly ten minutes before first he, and then we, were cleared inbound to the airport.

with only 2000 feet separation, is there a chance of jet wake severely disrupting the 737 flight? Thought these would need to be separated both by vertical and offset due to jet wash.....anyone?

The 737 was above the 747. Jet wake descends. So maybe the 747 should have been careful;)

ATC: Ah, 747, caution wake turbulence from 737 heavy above!
    747: ya, sure, ok:)

    Drag race. Awesome!! :D

Just curious (for the commercial airline pilots here), what's the fastest ground speed you've attained?

A few years ago, 752 kts with 213 kts of wind

Within the last month, 725 kts with 186 kts of wind.

This is with the speed pushed up from normal cruise of around Mach .83 or so to the RVSM airspace limit of Mach .90

High GS season is about over in the northern Pacific as the jetstream dies down when spring approaches.
