I have a 75 308 GT4 that is currently getting a bare metal repaint and feel I should address the bumpers on the car while not mounted. They are not in bad condition. How should I refinish the rubber bumpers and what's the best way to do this? Has anyone had any experience with this?

I was also considering shrinking the large rubber bumpers. With advice from Al I have to have new bumper shocks made 6" shorter. Any advice from any members or anyone who has done this to their car? Is 6" correct and can i shrink the back bumper also? Appreciate advice.

I'll chime in though I have little experience. As for refinishing the bumpers, you can give them a light sand and there are specific rubber bumper paints. I would think that is all it needs as long as there are no major nicks or chunks missing requiring a major repair.

I would not modify the bumper, itself. Many people drill out and push in the bumper shocks to get that more tucked look. The shocks are more easily replaced.

The GTB/S guys have somebody that made shorter bumper posts that go in place of the shocks but I doubt they would fit our GT4's.

If you are going to bare metal, it would be the best time to do a full euro conversion. Metal work would have to be done - adding in the front and there is a whole euro panel that is available. You would have to buy new bumper parts. DOT side markers would have to be filled. I don't know what this would do to the car's value, no matter how good the job, because it ceases to be original.

Good luck and post some pics of your restoration!

Pics would help. Please remember most in this section have GTB/S so I'm not even sure what your bumper looks like. I redid mine and could offer a whole lot of advice but not sure it would help your GT4.

Let me preface this by admitting this is just my opinion. It is your car, and please do what makes you happy.
Presuming you have a USA spec GT4, keep all of the car as the factory delivered it to the USA. No modifications, as it was intended for this market. This will preserve the value of your car.
That said: I have never seen a bumper modification that looked really good. All of them look like a half baked, Mickey Mouse, incomplete project which never seems to tie in with the rest of the styling.
Go with the USA bumpers, or change to the Euro bumpers completely. There is no "in between" sweet spot.
You have an investment in your Ferrari. Don't de-value it with personal taste and peer pressure. It is a piece of history.

Here are pictures of the car before it went in for the bare metal repaint. I am thinking of just keeping the original bumpers and keeping the car original the way it left the factory.

So, your car is a '75, is it a badged Dino? It looks like you have a horse on front but I can't tell form this pic.

You have the boxer paint scheme and that makes the orig usa bumpers about as hidden as they can be. Are you thinking of keeping the boxer paint?

I like the USA GT4 as delivered too. I also appreciate the added protection it gives the car.

Nino your car looks great!! I am considering updating the rims to 16" Ferrari rims at some pointe . Was also considering the old BBS RS rims. I saw a black Dino GT4 with them and thought they looked great! Don't know if the were the 5x108 or if they had adapters. I appreciate everyone response regarding the bumpers...

Kevin, your Dino looks georgious !
PLEASE keep it that way ! You only should "re-badge" it to the original Dino-badges and do not put any Cavallo anywhere , nor on the back on it !!! 1975 Dino has had no Cavallo anywhere.

And ... please keep the 14" rims because 16" have been introduced later.

btw. my GT4 is a 1980 car with original factory option 16" rims.

The correct BBS wheels to run are the E50 in a 16". They were a dealer option for 308's. I've had them on since 77. I had 7.5" all around and the fronts look great but the rears need a different offset. I am widening my rears to 8" and changing the offset and restoring the magnesium centers. If you like the RS's better then don't let my words influence you. It's your car. Do a google search on "308gt4 bbs" and search the images. Some cool examples of both wheels.

You will get a "fiero wheels?" joke every now and then.

Looking to get this look/stance but with gold centers:

us bumpers drilled and pushed. Reversible by getting a set of original shocks or just pulling them back out. For now I have the 'ears' front and back also removed. The whole look is tighter but you need a decent solution for the holes for the ears now exposed.

Even pushed these bumpers are massive. If you ever take one one you would laugh if you weren't having a hernia from trying to lift them - a lot of weight either end of the car.

I know others will protest, but if I were doing a full respay I would convert to full euro bumpers. I agree that originality matters, but if you are past the point of an original paint/time capsule car I doubt it matters all that much. Especially when the improvement in appearance is so significant. In the end, do what YOU like with your car and enjoy it.

I am also looking for euro bumpers. My car came with home made ones. I like them but not correct.
Anybody know where to find some?

If you painted those black (plastidip), I don't think it would look bad at all.

Thanks Italian One. My wheels came from Superformance. The only thing I would worry about with the BBS wheels is there rarity and finding replacements.
