Here's my question...OEM North American version dual distributor, dual coil......

Does anyone know the value of the ballast resistor on the (2) coils?

I was going to replace both OEM coils with a MSD epoxy potted unit (MSD #8222 High Vibration) and it recommens a 0.8 ohm resistor.

Can I use the old ones?

It looks like the horizontal mounting will be 'plug and play' otherwise.....

I've looked all thru my info and while shown on several diagrams I cannot see a value indicated......help!

Bubba, just approach it as a four cylinder points ignition. If MSD says to use that resistor, use it. Points are points, just a switch really. Condensors, coils, and ballasts are all just parts of a system. I have learned this though. That a certain gap at a certain pressure will only require a certain voltage to jump the gap. More coil or resistor wont change that. Only a increase in gap distance, coupled with higher resistance in the wires and residuals to contain it, will increase spark energy, all things being equal.

Yea, they offer the resistor as well, I just did not order it with the epoxy coils...thanks!

Yea, I've always used a .028 gap on my NGKs but Rifledriver pointed out that's about max...022" would be better or middle of the actual...015 to.025" from the Owner's Manual

That might be my problem, but I smelled burning paper...one coil has shorted.....

    Back to the parts counter....LOL!

I do have to tell you though,, Bubba, that its all your fault I really went fully back to points. And ive never regretted it for a second. I had Allison boxes on the other car, and MSD on this one, but once everything is ship shape it runs perfectly fine on just those dumb old points.

Well, I just think "when it's right, it's right" and truthfully if you drive it... that will last a long time......

That stuff was tough in it's day..........

They don't baby them at LeMans!

    BigTex,

The stock ballast resistors are 0.8 ohm. If you still have the original coils it list the 0.8 ohm requirement on the coil label. I’m running the same MSD coils with the stock resistor and have not had any problems.

    Many thanks!

I was hoping someone had gone down this road before........

I had not removed and examined the old units, as of yet.
