OK, this is really bugging me. It's affecting my "love affair" with my beloved 308.

I have annoying rattles coming from all corners of the car, and cannot locate the source. I've personally inspected ALL suspension, steering components, wheel bearings are fine, heater blower motors are tight, headlight buckets are tight.

The rattles are "metal-on-metal", coming from beneath/around the chassis, not the cabin.

I have brand new ES control-arm bushings, new Varishocks/QA-1 springs--and they're all installed properly and tight. I know the urethane bushings sqeak--that's not what I'm talking about here....

It's as if the rattles are eminating from "inside" the area in front of the rear wheels, and around the steering rack. The rack is very tight--I've removed the spare tire surround and have great access to it.

Anybody have any suggestions for a cure? I hate to admit it, but my Ferrari is a "rattle-trap"!

Or, is this just normal? :(

In the front and the rear?
Front, battery tray or cover, 308GT4's also have a panel underneath the front of hte car that can be loose.
Rear, check the clearance between the shift rod and frame, engine etc. Or the aluminum covers on your exhaust headers are loose, or perhaps one of the fender access panels at rear is loose?

One of the first assistance I got from this list was when I forst bought my '78 GTB and complained of noise/vibration... the air conditioner lines vibrate against the fiberglass bits in front of the left rear wheel. Putting pipe insulation on this lines at the rubbing point solves a great deal of my noise.

Bill meant to say the right rear wheel, and mine vibrated there too. Wrap the AC lines in some foam. Might help.

Thanks everybody--all good advice, much appreciated.

My A/C lines do vibrate over my right shoulder, but only at 90mph or so..
    I need to wrap 'em..

Gerrit, all your items check OK, except, how do I check my shift rod clearance? Isn't that enclosed, unable to be viewed from beneath?

Thanks again to all, and keep the ideas comin'!

I have a similar problem which actually goes away at higher speeds and when the car warms up. Right now everything has been gone over, the new springs and shocks are tight however I am actually thinking the rattle may be in the rear springs themselves as that is for sure the area the noise is coming from. When I press down on the rear you can hear a metal on metal click as the car raises again if that makes sense. When time permits I will swop out and see if the problem goes away. Could it be an incorrect length/pressure spring causing this?

    Hi guys...

OK, after pressing on various objects on my car, I found what may be the culprit(s): the rear header shield is a bit loose, and I can't find a way to tighten it. It's just kind of "slid on" over the header, like a sleeve, with no way to tighten it down. There are 3 bolts on the header, visible from the top, but they don't seem to secure the shield, they just rise up through it. Who knows, the forward may also be loose, but I can't see it or reach it in my driveway.

Also, the forward bolt (there are 2) that attaches the rear header to the exhaust is a bit loose, but is rusty and unwilling to be tightened.

There is no exhaust shield on my '77. Don't these sometimes sit above the exhaust, below the trunk? Can't seem to find one on my car...

    Thanks for the ideas everybody,
    Greg
