I need to rebuild the left rear caliper due to leaking. After searching, I still don't know how to detach the hand brake cable as a first step. I think Birdman's procedure is for a '78, seems different to mine anyway.
    Any suggestions please?

You should be able to move the lever away from the caliper. This should move the piston inward. The cable with the slot on the end should now have some slack, which should allow you to remove it from the hook on the end of the lever

If that doesn’t work the flat assembly that holds the pulleys can be removed from the frame (two bolts). The pulleys will remain with the flat assembly. That will give you plenty of room.

Thanks... I'll try moving the lever again, hadn't thought about the assembly.

Remove the two bolts and brake line. raise caliper twist to unclip cable. or juust undo cable at union.

Ive done at least four rears real easy and fun. But i dont remember if the rears have shims for the mounting bolts. I dont think they do. IDk

A prybar against the inside of the wheel easily moves the lever arm enough for the cable stirrup to come right off.

Both sides of my tears have shims. One each on the left side and two on the right side.

Not all are the same them. You need to mic the spacing. Do not follow what someone else did

Some great info for me to work through here ...really appreciate!!
I'm going at a snail's pace so this will take me a while, I'll certainly look out for any shims as well...

I used a big screwdriver to push the lever forward and popped the cable loop off the end. I suppose if it was still to tight and I had a second set of hands I might have some one do the same on the other side at the same time. Then I'd go after unbolting the pulley mechanism.

That nearly worked (just needed a longer screwdriver) ...ended up just removing the caliper which then allowed me to remove the cable.

Put an 11mm socket on the caliper half bolt to use as a fulcrum for a pry bar or long screwdriver. You will need to do that when you get the caliper back on because I can't imagine trying to install the caliper with the cable attached!

    Sure, but why fight it?

You should do the initial piston extender adjustment with the cable off anyway.
