Does anybody have a good source and specs (length/size) for all the fuel hose in a carb 308 (1977)? I'm about to replace all mine (because of fuel odor), but I'm getting different stories as to what fits. Ferrari of Houston tells me that it takes 7-9- and 20 mm sections (black braided hose). Others on F-Chat have said 5/16" hose will work.

How about it? More than one size needed? Sources?

    TIA,
    Greg in Houston

5/16" will work just fine to replace the 7mm lines. For the 9mm lines use 3/8". The fuel tank cross over is closer to 30mm, not 20 so I don't know what FOH is talking about. I don't think anyone's got a source for a non-OEM cross over connection and they're $50 each. I would bet you could find a fuel line at an industrial supply shop to replace the cross over lines for much less money but I've not reseached that here in Houston.

NAPA has braided fuel hose that can be purchased by the foot and cut to fit (which is what I did). You could ask about metric sizes but I'm guessing they'd have to special order those. Just make a quick measure of your exising lines, add a few feet and go by one single long hose and cut to fit.

Your odor is from the carbs, not the fuel lines. But replacing them is not a bad idea if you don't know when it was last done.

Also, the fuel filler kneck is a source of potential leaks and that also is an OEM only part.

I just replaced all of mine 8mm from fuel pump to carbs and loop back to back right hand side carb.

6 mm overflow line back into gas tank on the back right hand side carb to the fuel tank.

Any stock braided hose will do you should be able to pick it up in any general stockist for car parts.

Simple job no more than 30 mins work once you take the air filter unit off, a bugger of a job with 16 bolts to remover to take the Carn flute tops off

Be careful not to let any of the 16 metal seals that sit under the filter air housing and on top of the carbs screws drop into your butterfly valves when you take the filter unit off - stuff your carbs with paper/ cloth before you do this.

Apart from that a simple job!

    sean/tom oshea,

Thanks for the advice--I'll follow it!

Will rubber fuel line do? Does it have to be braided? I've found some at O
    Reilly's-- 5/16" and 1/4', but it's rubber covered.

As long as it is designed for fuel, it's fine. If it is, it says it right on the side of the line.

VW dealers keep most of the metric hose sizes in stock. Better still it is braided and an exact copy of the factory stuff. Not expensive either.

Where did you find metric fuel line? I couldn't find it anywhere, although as far as I can tell, 5/16" and 1/4" was the same size as OEM metric. The stuff I used was actually a bit beefier.

You can get braided or plain metric fuel hose at any foreign car parts store. I went with plain old fractional fuel hose but I did us FUEL INJECTION hose. It is stronger and fits without a problem, also use fuel injection clamps.

Does anyone have any info on doing an Aeorquip, or braided stainless replacement. I have had a carb fire and seen several, (not in the 308 fortunately), and would like to go bullet proof on this one. Fires scare the sh*t out of me - and going non stock doesn't bother me in the slightest for safety.

I replaced the filler neck hose on my '78 GTS with fuel grade hose from NAPA P/N 1055. Cut to length and secured with new "Marmon Clamps". Better than new, cheap too.

I used hose that has a blue stripe down the side against the black rubber, it is about 1/4" thick. It was such a b1tch to put in!!! Paid $10 for it and it is 50 times better than the OEM crap that only lasts 10 years max if you are lucky. Mine is also much better than new.

The best fuel hose you can get is the OEM stuff from the BMW dealer. They sell it by the foot (or meter). I replaced all the hoses in my 308 with it 15 years ago, and it still looks and performs like new.

In a bind, I replaced the fuel hoses on my BMW 850i with NAPA fuel hoses, and smelled fuel in a couple of weeks. Inspection showed them all cracked longitudinally and weeping under the pressure. A trip to the BMW dealer solved the problem.

I would never run anything but the BMW hoses, especially in an injected car (higher fuel pressure).

    Mike,
My car is a 77 308 carb car--lower fuel pressure--but still--good to know that BMW is a good source for fuel hoses. What size did you get? Obviously your car is fuel-injected, so I believe it has larger hoses.........

I don't know if the hose is actually larger, but i am sure it is rated for higher presure, (with injection), This sounds like a good low cost margine of safety,
I would still like to look at braided stainless, (i know it isn't stock but a greater margine of safety, especially with fuel, seems worthwhile.

    imho,
    chris

Mine is a '75 carb car - can't be too careful about fuel lines. The BMW lines come in 6mm and 8mm for sure - probably other sizes available - check with the parts guy at the BMW dealership. They stock them in big rolls.

I anguished over replacing the cloth-covered lines with bare rubber, but read an article that the cloth covering may conceal cracks and weep holes, so I made the decision.

There was an article in Forza a while back about replacing fuel hoses and the author specifically said that braided SS was a bad idea for fuel lines. Something to do with covering up future leaks and also it's hard to cut well and leaves pointy SS wires poking up all over the connections. He also said the OEM hose with the braided cloth exterior, although it looks original, doesn't last very long and is prone to seepage and fuel smell. He suggested "domestic rubber fuel hose" (i.e. your basic NAPA fuel-grade rubber hose) as the best thing. Even though as the years pass this hose may get less flexible, it rarely leaks unless disturbed.

Thanks Mike and Birdman for that info. Makes great sense.

Birdman swears that 5/16" and 1/4" hose will do the job, yet the OEM stuff was metric. I wonder about snugness of the hose on fittings if it's not a perfect size. I know rubber gives a bit, so if the I.D. is just a bit smaller, that should be OK. I think I'll probably wait until I remove a section, and bring it over to the parts store (BMW parts counter?) and match it up.

SS--vs--braided--vs--rubber? Well, I guess I'll go for rubber......!

Braided is not good from what I've heard also. I am using the pinkish/red colored hose as shown here with no problems so far. Bought it from a marine hose supply warehouse. stuff was bucks, but gives me a piece of mind.
