The 1st owner ordered the car and it was delivered with the Ferrari F1 race team to a garage in Santa Monica, for the 1977 Long Beach Grand Prix. Niki Lauda gave him a demo ride around Santa Monica.
The owner had a machine shop and a collection of 12 cylinder Ferraris, 2 Gull Wings and a Jaguar. He shortened the bumper mounts and gave it the boxer paint treatment.
In 1983 he ran out of space for cars and I knew his mechanic. I had been shopping for a 246 Dino, but found this a more liveable car. I drove it as my daily driver until 1995. My rain car was a 1972 Citroen DS21. I adopted 2 kids in 1995 and quickly realized that neither car was going to work, so they were replaced by an Audi A8, a fine family car.
I always wondered where the car went and heard through the grapevine of forced sale, maybe 5 years ago.
The original owner claimed he'd bought the 1st steel bodied car. My mechanic friend serviced many Bay Area Ferraris and had the Supercuts guy as a client. That fellow thought he had the first steel car. Serial numbers suggested #21039 was first.
Where are you and the car located?
    Regards, Zero

Zero, I'm in Pittsburgh, the car was restored outside of Columbus Ohio. If you look through this thread you can see it was pretty tired by the time I got it. The guy that had it before me was Bob Wassam who used to post on Fchat. He gave it to Sierra Classics to sell in Reno, which is where I bought it. At this point I'd call it highly modified, much better than new. What was the name of the first owner? I have a history of the car but it starts with you, I don't have anything before you got the car. As for it being the first steel car, I'm not sure about that but it is one of the first for sure.

According to the registry, the car is the 37th steel body 308.

Now if someone can tell me the first owner's name, I will have the complete history of the car!

George, having had two gullwings he should be easy to find on the gullwing registers/groups.

So I have to say that the Tubi exhaust is truly a great improvement. I didn't expect to like as much as I do. It has a similar acoustic signature to the Ansa only deeper and a little louder but not obnoxious. The next question is: Do I strip the insulation out of the air box or not? The '76 308s have zero stuffing in the air box. In '77 they started putting all the pollution controls on the cars and when pulling all this junk off the engine the one that is often missed is the air box.

And so after six years my 308 ownership comes to a close. I think I put at least another 40 years of life into the old girl. It was a great learning experience and now I'm off to my next Fcar adventure.
