If it is the original pump I would not rebuild it. The V8 went through many design changes to the water pumps and I'd never consider rebuilding one from a 77. You want one from a late 308 QV to a replacement pump made up until 95 or so.

+1 -- Measure the OD of the bearing outer race. If it is 35mm, it would be better to get the later 308QV water pump 121255 with 42mm OD bearings as Brian suggested.

Thanks for the shout out Vonbarron.

In full transparency, rebuilding waterpumps and the other fun stuff that I tinker with on these cars (Bosch CIS stuff mainly) is not my regular job. I have had the great fortune of learning how to do this work from some amazing individuals including Martin308GTB from this Board as well as one of my true hero's, Dave Helms. Anyway, my work on waterpumps started after a disappointing experience with multiple failed water pump rebuilds for my 328 by a well known rebuilder (If you're interested it's chronicled on this site somewhere).

I agree with Rifledriver, if the pump is original to your 77' I would recommend moving to a later 3x8 pump with the larger 42mm bearings. I use a more modern single piece water pump seal on these rebuilds which has proven to be quite reliable. The first waterpump I ever rebuilt was in 2014 and remains on my 328 this day. I think I have a few large bearing core pumps ready to be rebuilt if you're interested.

Is there a reliable way to tell which bearing size one has with the pump installed on the car? Or would I need to have the pulley or pump removed?

You should be able to tell by looking at the outer diameter of the water pump housing without removing the pulley. I don't have the exact measurements handy but you can see from the image below that the OD of the bearing on the larger bearing pump is 42mm while on the small bearing pump it is 35mm. I'm not sure what the exact thickness of the pump housing wall is but all things being equal, the outer diameter of the pump housing would be 7mm difference between the two. I have several large bearing pump cores at home and I'll measure the outer diameter of the housing and report back tonight after work.

Whatever "upgraded" wp Rutland sold 25 years ago is pretty damn robust and durable.

FWIW, I had mine rebuilt by the Flying Dutchman. It's been in service since October 2017. So far, so good.
