    I just got off the phone with my old group at the Bones Co.chatting about the record flight of the 777-200LR and thought that I would mention that they had 360,762 pounds of fuel on board at take- off and had over 2 hours of fuel left when they landed. That's another 1000 miles that they could have gone without reserves. Trip was 13,442 miles.Great airplane!

    What i'm really wondering is how far you could fly the thing if it was stripped out and filled to max T/O with fuel. How efficient is a 777 compaired to a purpose built aircraft like those Rutan planes that flew around the world unrefueled?

    lbs per hour would be fine..... here in training they like to torture us by making us look up the highest acceptable flight level in a table to get a page number for a fuel graph.

    I'll see what I can find out Monday or Tuesday. I'm a little rusty on all that stuff since I left but I try to keep up with it when I can. I wasn't in the performance end of things as much as I was in the physical configuration stuff. They kept me in a little room designing the flying wires on the Dash 8.

    Good morning mark. I have some rough figures on fuel burn, the refined numbers are being crunched as we speak. The 737 burns 5000 to 6000 pounds per hour, the KC-135 burns 10,000 pounds per hour, and the rough figures for a 200LR at the moment is 20,000 pounds per hour . As you are aware, these figures can go up or down depending on mission profile. More coming later.

    I guess I'm making a bad Monday morning start. Belay that 20K figure for the 777-200LR and put down 13,000PPH for the 777-200LR, based on a 3000 mile mission. Actual figures aren't mine to have right now but I was told that the 13K figure is close since there are no viable reasons to change it at present. There was 18,700 lbs remaining on board after the record breaking flight and the crew saw two sunrises during the flite. That was done, however, in WW2 by a PBY-5 Catalina that flew 25 hrs. non-stop.

    good publicity stunt by the B-777.


    but whats the point of a Transport Catagory aircraft breaking distance records if it doesn't do it with a sizable payload?

    although it was cool what the 777 did, distance only records should stay with the likes of Burt Rutan.

    Now do it with a payload, and you've impressed the crap out of me.

    B-777 is a bad azz jet though.

    Okay, Mario, here's your answer re range and load for the 777-200LR : Max. taxi weight= 766,000 LBS., 301 passengers, 53,440 gals of fuel ( I calculate approx. 370,000 LBS.), 9420 N.Mi. range. Zat do it ?

    I used to work in the group that designed this airplane. I went back and asked. I spent 16 years in preliminary design working on the 747,767, 777, and 747-500-600. I'll dig for you some more if you want.

    Bob, If in fact your numbers are correct, I'm impressed but not suprised.

    I just wish the attempt would have been made with 301 pax instead if 30 or so reporters.

    either way, the 777 is still an awesome bird.
