Who would want their pension cancelled?

I'm guessing that the stipulation was that new hires would not get a pension, but that existing pensions would still be in force. That is the trend, not only in aerospace, but in American industry in general. Employees would be encouraged to make full use of their 401(k) options instead, which often include a company match for company stock included in the portfolio.

The 777 production line is a well oiled machine, I'm sure they'll do just fine. When I worked there I started as an electrician at final body join in 96' and things ran pretty dang smooth. Night and day difference from Lockheed Martin which couldn't begin to match Boeing's efficiency, a misfortune I live in every day.

They should have stayed with that system with the 787.

But, politics, I guess, dictated that they have every stove and storm door company in the world help build the thing.
