I'm interested in this car and want to get peoples opinion on it 78 930 turbo matching numbers 55k mi Mohr Imports, Inc.
It appears that the previous owner took care of all the issues that are common on such models. What does "rebuild" imply? A full rebuild or just the typical gasket, compression, valve service? (That requires the engine to be dismounted) Labor costs for these cars are pricey so take a quote for a clutch and flywheel change as to clarify that you are sure about running costs. I've had 2 of these and sold them because 1- handling was just outrageous 2- electrical problems appeared without any logical explanation My first one had major rust issues around the engine compartment and at the base of the rear window The second was a solid car but the ride was bothering me. On a stock suspension it is wobly and on a "sport" setup it bites you like a cobra. Take a good look behind the dash (under it and over the carpet) for signs of repair or damage. Good luck
It looks like a nice car, but please get a thorough PPI from an air cooled specialist. I would try and find out why the front valence is black instead of body color. Candy apple paint is very hard to touch up, but on a valence, you can get it fairly close. Now, the imperfections in the paint are another story. As the car was repainted, it could be due to the prep, but most likely, it is a failure of the galvanic coating. I've seen many Porsches with this problem, mine included. If you can't stand it, you'll need an engine out, windows out repaint.
Thanks for the input guys. They sent the car to auction this weekend in Monterey. I will try to look at it there. If the reserve is not met and they take the car back I would seriously look into purchasing it. The phantom electrical problems kind of worry me.
derek i have and 86 gunmetal/black with 89k miles, sports seats, factory BBS, sunroof, short shift kt, tool kit and what looks to be an Stainless steel B&B dual pipe exhaust. clean and clear title. pretty nice condition but no show quality. no rust issues. it does have a dent in rockers in which looks like the previous owner ran over something. no other damage on the body. it had a valve guide top end rebuild about 3 years ago before i bought the car. it does still leak a tad of oil. suspension is stock a bit tired compared to any new car so i planned on a refresh. cant tell if the AC works since they barely worked new as im told. losing garage space and need to free up a couple of stalls. i havent advertised it anywhere yet so here goes. If you are interested. shoot me a pm with your private email address because I cant post any pics up on the forum. asking 29,500 obo hf hf
Definitely need a PPI. Seems like it could be a great deal if everything is sorted out and no major issues that need to be addressed.
FWIW: owned a zillion of these... alot more "5-yr tail piep exempt" DOT only grey market versions(what a car!)-NOT legal in CA!!! This strikes me as alot of money for what it is, miles and deviation from stock being the major factors here... IMO-low clock, stock, 1st paint versions are whats best...pay up for the BEST car you can find...after all, your not using it to drive to work-right? MOST importantly, have car examined by 930 EXPERTS(dont want to sound like an ******, but only guys at least 50 yrs old....)...experience on these-like Ferraris-is everything...EVERYTHING
I had a '79. Very reliable car. Be careful about adding too much hp.... I did and it became a lot less fun to drive. I just looked at the pict and can pretty much tell you why they had a rebuild at 44k and replaced the head studs. They have added a larger intercooler, turbo, and an aftermarket air cleaner. I will bet money the owner increased the boost to 1 or 1.1 bar (or higher) and ultimately did some damage. If you get this car the intercooler is a keeper but the air cleaner actually robs you about 10hp over the stock unit as it doesn't have the "bell". I would revert to the .7 bar boost spring as well (though they likely did it after the rebuild) until you really figured out how you want to build it out. Otherwise the 4 speed trans is really a tough unit, straight from the race program and far stronger then the 5 speeds in the other 911's. If it shifts good then it is fine. Clutch is an easy job. Yeah you drop the motor but that is only 6 or 7 bolts. Just like your old VW. The brake rotors suck to replace. They are also from the race program and are "floating". So they cost a bit more then typical rotors.
My opinion... I couldn't live with the muscle car color and would budget $20K-$30K to put it back to guards red. Other than that ...good advice from 335s' post above.
A lot of work on this car with only 55K miles. Definitely needs a thorough ppi to confirm the mileage. I would also want to see the receipts on the work done, and who did the work. Not sure about the comments above on the h.p. and handling. When the car is set up properly, the handling is predictable with no surprises. I had my motor rebuilt when we lived in CA. 3.5 twin plug, 390 chp @.9 bar, passed smog (legally) with no issues. I also run a 8:39 ring & pinion for better low speed response. I had a stock '78 turbo I didn't particularly like. The stock gears are set up for Autobahn cruising. I use to be able to go from 10 to 85 mph in 2nd gear, I referred to it as a semi-automatic. If you don't like the color, then don't buy it. It would be a small fortune to have it repainted.
Mine ultimately dyno'd at 450hp with @400tq. These single turbocharger cars have pretty dramatic transitions from low to high power. Even the best race drivers of the era had issues with it at those levels. I also had that lower ring and pinion installed and the combination led to very dramatic accelerations (ie: you really get pressed back in your seat hard). It took a lot of work to get that safely (for the engine that is) and not peaky. Some fun bits about these cars. After a spirited drive you can look under the car and see the headers glowing a nice red. Also on a wet day you can "twist" the body accelerating and have a little water drip in under the corner windscreen seal. It's a fun car but I made it unfun to drive in the Seattle wet. So I sold it to a guy that drove it to LA.
My opinion to the red one - it's not original, for me it's wasted. Pornstar Red and this ugly brake-light...the only good thing on it is the low mileage. Try to buy below 35k and let it paint in india red, this is a great color. Add the Fuchs rims and you'd have a perfect 930. For the 930 it's important to have either enough knowledge to service it on your own or knowing a good repair service. I'm lucky having a good mechanician at the Porsche centre here in my hometown.
