Came across a beautiful, lightly restored two-owner example yesterday. 140k miles, engine rebuilt at 80k, new head studs, clutch, chain tensioner upgrade. New leather, restored top, good tires, tons of records. Only flaws I can find are a crack in the rear reflector and the dash is a little worn.

I know what Excellence, Hagerty, etc say, but I'm interested in the opinions of the real experts :)

Obviously, for many, the targa is a knock...but the stainless targa bar against the Quartz paint is really stunning!

Prices moving so fast I hesitate to opine but I will venture to speculate that the historic discount for targas may well be fading. My evidence for this is solely my own psyche. My first 911 (of a dozen+) was a targa back in 86. At the time I thought it looked kinda clunky relative to coupe. Now however, when I see a targa, I discover nostalgia welling up inside and think it has a funky, period vibe. It resonates with a bygone era, which is why people buy old cars, right?
Knowing that none of us are truly individuals and that sea changes of opinion like this well up simultaneously as the zeitgeist evolves, I'll bet others feel the same. Or will shortly. So to the extent you can convince the seller it deserves a discount, go for it!

We have an 81 Targa SC in our collection - it was my wife's first Porsche so despite a lack of monetary value, it has tremendous sentimental value to us. Try posting on on Rennlist for some good opinions on value?

I was thinking low-mid 30's may be market correct. Seller has started it at $40, $38,500 floor which, I think, is firm...for the time being, at least.

    It IS a charmer...ahhhh!! :)
