Guys I have a question need opinions suggestions and a goog How to if I tackle this. My quarter window trim is quite shiny compared to other cars I have seen. It apears the anodizing has worn away. And my seals are very hard and have multiple cracks and separation of the seal. I would prefer to replace these seals and have my window trim re-done. Question is should I even bother with this or leave it as is? I know it will lead to me trying to replace the headliner, next to the window trim and those seals the headliner is a weak point of my car. I just haven't found anything really detailed about removing this trim and installation of the window and trim. Thanks Johnny
The 1/4 windows on the door or the rear 1/4 windows? The fronts are a one piece frame with the roll down windows. The rear 1/4 windows are held in by the trim pieces. You need to remove them carefully so you don't bend them. When I restored my Weissach, my friend pulled the trim and the glass. I refinished the trim with Rustoleum 7777 Satin Black. Then had the window installer put in all the glass on my car. If you want to do the headliner, it is best to pull all the glass. Try this. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/597423-removing-coupe-quarter-windows.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/670800-911sc-window-trim-removel-refinishing.html
Has to be the REAR 1/4 window... You don't have to touch the headliner to do the door fixed 'vents'... just open the door.
Yeah the rear glass not the door glass. I have seen the pelican site for that headliner work but nothing detailed about the window trim. I haven't takes One if these apart and I like to know the details before I start tearing into it.
Johnny, The black trim that was on the 70's 930's has a tendency to fade and turns to a dark purplish patina. If your trim is not scratched or dented I would leave it alone as it is part of your original car. I can not see how far your rubber trim has cracked but you might try coating your rubber trim with glycerin and/or Aerospace 303 for a couple days. The 303 is pricey but works real well. You might find it to be a better alternative than pulling the rear quarter windows apart. Bud
Unfortunately these seals are no good, it has gaps of about a 1/4 inch in places and it's hard as a rock. I'm good with the patina of the molding but I don't like the seal in this shape. I'll try to get some photos of what I'm dealing with.
Removal is simple. However if you haven't done it before, have a friend help you so that you don't drop the glass. Remove the leather trim just under the window.. 3 screws. This is only to keep you from scratching the leather during the re-install process. From the inside, begin to pull back on the rubber with one hand while and exerting pressure on glass in that area at the same time. Continue this all the way around the window and you will feel it begin to give, and you may slowly push it out. This will not cause damage to the headliner and it will remain in place. Remove the trim after the glass & seal have been removed from the car. Less chance of bending and easier removal.. be careful with it and take your time. Install the seal on the glass, then re-install the trim into the channel of the seal prior to putting the glass & new rubber back into the car. Otherwise, you may not get the trim to fit into the channel properly.. Sometimes they won't seat as they should. To reinstall glass and new seal back into the car. - Take a bit of dish detergent and spread around the window opening, pinch weld etc.. - Don't spread it on the seal as it just make it harder to handle. - Now you will basically reverse the removal process. And you will need an extra set of hands. If you cannot get it in, you will need to use the "rope" method to get the seal to lay down and pull around and over the sealing area. Its a not difficult, but a little more complex to explain. From some of my old records, the Porsche par #s you need will be: 911.543.035.01 = left 911.543.036.01 = right Good luck..
