    Hello all,

I recently bought a 95 456, and was quoted yesterday $8,500 for the 30K service. This seems twice what I would expect (40 hours labor and $2,000 in parts).

    Can anyone offer insight?

Anyone have the "by the book" list of 30K service items?

    Thank you

I would start by calling a few other FNA dealers and inquire on what they charge, and what is included in the service. Sometimes dealers will go beyond what the factory recommends for the 30k service. Whether this is needed or not is up to you and your service provider.

Seems real high to me, especially considering that the engine does not need to come out for the timing belt replacement, wasn't that the "advantage" of having FR setup vs. MR setup? I agree with Dave, call around and ask fellow members in your area. With your car being a '95, the warranty should not be an issue, unless you bought extended warranty from Ferrari or something like that. So I will probably look for a capable and reputable indenpendent shop to work on your car for you, you can save a lot of $$$ that way.

    NOOOOOOOOO FREEKING WAY!!!!!!!

They are ripping you off. The engine does not need to come out to changed the belts on a 456. The Modial T, 348, 355, and TR models all have to have the engine removed to do the belt change. You will get charged any were from $4,000 up to $7,000 to do the engine OUT major, depending on if you have an idependant mechanic do the work or the dealer. Like I said that is with the engine being REMOVED from the car. So if these guys are trying to charge you 8g$ to do the major and the engine stays in.........run far far away.

    Run Forest Run!

I suggest you find an independant shop to do the job, or do it yourself.

    Unclebrother -

I think this is high too. I had a friend get a 30k service done on a 456 recently (by our local independent shop) and it was more like $3500.

Try filling out your profile. If we knew where you were we could probably suggest a reputable independent mechanic to talk to.

Thank you to all who are taking the time to reply.

I think the dealer is backing off the number, saying that it could cost that much, but without details, agrees it could also be less.

I hate to say bad things about this dealer as they're the only one, and while one person at the shop (who I never met) called and gave me the high number, another guy in the shop, who has been great to deal with, said wait and see. I'm hoping that when they're done with what is essentially a PPI, that they'll come back with "good news" on the list of to-do's, and the cost. But any suggestions on alternates in the Portland, OR area would be good.

Has anyone heard of Grand Prix Imports in Wilsonville? Any thoughts?

What they quoted you was sort of a worse case sanario (sp?). Basicly they included tensioners, water pump, hoses under the intake, upper rad hose, lower rad hose, and any other incidentals that they have come across while doing this service on other cars. Don't forget, that along with the 30k service, there are other items to be looked at and changed, like brake fluid, trans fluid, engine coolant, thermostat, wiper blades, nut and bolt checking, road testing, engine oil change and filters (2 on your car), valve adjustment is also in there, so there is the added cost of the shims etc.

A 30k service can get up close to that number on any Ferrari from a 308 all the way on up to the big 12's it just depends on how picky you want to be and how honest the shop/dealer is. Have a good conversation with the tech or service advisor (better to talk to the tech in all cases if possiable) See what really needs to be changed and what can wait. Don't be afraid to ask any and all questions that come to mind. Better yet, be at the shop in front of the car, and have both the tech and service advisor walk you through the service and parts before the wrenches start turning.

Remember ther is no silly question..don't be afraid to pick there brains and to explain themsleves and there concerns. If you don't understand what they are saying, ask them to explain again in terms you can understand.

Hope everything works out for you.

Parts list? I think you can contact TRutlands or Ricambi and find out how much and content of a 30K service kit. Good luck.

Grand Prix are a very friendly group of guys. I have been interested in several of their cars since they opened, and I've spend a few saturday afternoons there. They seem willing to do anything at all...for a price. I dont know that you'd save any money having them do a service over RTGT. If you can show grand prix that you have some knowledge of what is involved in the service they would be more inclined to explain their price to you. If they think you're just another owner who doesn't know jack about your car you'll get jerked around.

TBakowsky's answer is right on. RTGT has done a lot of work on my 456 (they did the major for the previous owner) and I've had very good experiences with them.

You could also go to The Jag Shop, where the owner (Craig) owns a 456 and is factory trained on the car, or to ATD, although I don't think he's done much 456 work. Both of those shops are essentially one man operations, though (if you want Craig to work on it personally), so expect to leave your car with them for a long time.

I doubt either ATD or The Jag Shop would be much, if any, cheaper.

Incidentally, don't let RTGT sell you the ridiculous Shell oil. They can use Mobil 1, and it's much cheaper, but you have to ask them to do it.

I would suggest you also post this in the Northwest forum, as you may get more responses about local shops.
