To get around emission testing in MD, I need to be able to show that in 1981 the number of 308 GTSi's produced was 1000 units or less. Since there were a total of 1092 produced in that year, I would like to find an authoritative looking source that gives U.S. production only that I can use at the DMV. Any ideas?

    Hey Rob,
What process are you using to bypass the test. I have an '81 GTBi. I think there were only 495 of these. I'd love to be exempt from the test due to the low production numbers.
Is there some form available from the DMV?
    Thanks,
    Will

    Will,

It's actually the requirement for historic tags which will also exempt you from the emissions tests. Three possible scenerios apply for historic tags. 25 years old or older OR 20 to 24 years old and the manufacturer is out of business OR 20 to 24 years old and in that year of production 1000 or fewer vehicles of that model were produced.

Historic tags in MD have a few draw backs that you may or may not be able to live with. I can live with them. In a worst case scenerio, I can get regular tags, fail the test, fufill the requirements for a 2 year waiver and then get historic tags. I'd rather just do it now. I also don't really want the guys up at emissions running the car on the treadmill.

in MD there is also the 2rd option for getting historic plates. If the car is 20 years or older AND is no longer a production model (as verified by the manufacturer). I would think this would be easier to meet. The form is online @ the MVA website - http://www.mva.state.md.us/.

Actually the make itself has to be no longer produced. That works for an MG, but not a Ferrari. All I really need are US production numbers. Unfortunately, I've never seen them broken down that way.

I think FNA is the only one who can give you the "official" numbers.

However, my own info shows that there are just over 400 of 1981 308 GTSi made for the US.

Also: according to "Automotive News", a total of 904 Ferraris went to the US in 1981. Even if ALL cars were 308 GTSi, it's still under 1000. So, maybe you can use this or a similar source too ....
