812 engine cut off at 5000 rpm

    Anyone experience this... when I start my 812 cold (didn’t drive for a few days), I found the engine cannot go beyond 5000rpm...you need to up shift... this goes up to 3rd gear and works ok at the 4th gear...

    is it a protection to the engine? I had F12 and have TDF... and other Ferrari too...but this only happens with 812.

    yes, this is normal until the engine is warm.

    Weird, I couldn't make it happen and I tried. The only thing that happens when I pull out of the garage and into the driveway is that it runs rough for about 10-15 seconds. I have no problem revving to 6000 as soon as I am turning on to the main road from my street. It's half a block from my driveway to the wider main road that my street dumps into. I tested this on a cold start this afternoon after reading this thread.

    Yes, this happened to me many times in cold weather.

    If the ambient temperature was high the engine may already be warm.

    Don't exceed 4 grand until oil temp is at normal level. Should get there sooner if you let it idle a bit longer first. :)

    But Hong Kong is not that cold and this happens in summer too.

    And I have other Ferraris, never happen with the other Ferraris.

    I experimented the same yesterday with my F12, by 25°C AT and 10 miles after dead start! Not sure if only up to 3rd gear however.
    Surprising and frustrating.
    I have another Fcar as well I never noticed it with, although same V12 engine (FF).
    I wonder if this cold protection is set identically on all the Fcars, perhap's the F12 and 812 engines are more protected at cold?

    Yes, it is normal for the 812SF to protect the engine. Mine does it often on cooler mornings here in Seattle. I accidentally found it myself once, now I keep it 4K or below until oil reaches at least 165° F and coolant is 170°+ F. Notably, that’s also when the VDA status switches from warming up, to go.

    Hmm, my VDA status was just "GO" and the car still not reved freely yesterday.
    I called my Ferrari tech who told me the dashboard (and VDA) is managed from the sensors via some algorithms vs the protection and engine management straight from sensors; which can explain a difference.
