Hi guys, My new 812 GTS is here. Its in for PPF. What do you do for the CF and non-painted black side skirts? The installer told me that the PPF won't stick to non-painted surfaces. Thanks
Carbon yes plastic no. Also, look for center console area for ppf. You can scratch it pretty easy inside cabin. But for me personally, I won’t do PPF. It is double sided sword. It saved paint a few instances but it also destroyed paint when removing it. I would rather drive conservatively without PPF. Keep in mind that PPF life lasts 3 years and once it passes 3 years, do not remove it or chances of damages to paint is high. The glue that attaches PPF hardens after 3 years. Depends on the ppf and the fitter, the latest Xpel is guaranteed for 10 years, and can be removed easiley by the installer. I prefer my cars to look mint all the time PPF makes this happen. I hate seeing my car with even just one chip in the paintwork...... and your installer is correct ppf does not stick to plastic. Ask if he can wrap the plastic, and then install ppf over the top
Don't PPF a brand new car. That paint needs time to cure, especially if it is 3M film. At least a month after delivery should pass before wrapping. Wrap the CF. When your plastics get beat up, get it painted satin black. Then when that is cured, wrap it in satin film. Sent from my SM-G930F using FerrariChat.com mobile app
It's almost 4 weeks before the US bound cars are delivered to their owners after production so, I wouldn't worry about the cure time. Agree in wrapping the carbon Fiber.
My wrapper won't touch a car in less than four months from paint. I would just enjoy the car for a bit, then get the obligatory paint correction followed by the wrap. Better safe than sorry. Sent from my SM-G930F using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I haven’t done mine yet . But on SF I did the black rockers and it worked fine. On my GTS will do paint only. I don’t have exterior carbon
It will be Verde Zeltweg. I posted my config in another thread. Feb delivery. Went through this when I wrapped the front of my Lusso last year. That is Nero Stellato on Sabbia. Are you thinking that the colour might influence the longevity or issues that might arise from wrapping? Sent from my SM-G930F using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Unless it gets a touch up at the port which we are told is not uncommon. Also, if you have special paint like a 3-layer the PPF will affect the appeal of the paint. High use and DDs can benefit from PPF. Special cars are used so little that PPF can do more harm than good.
Completely agree. On my Lusso that has a triple layer black, it shows. But as a winter daily, it is needed on the front. For weekend toys, get a full paint correction and a ceramic coating. Sent from my SM-G930F using FerrariChat.com mobile app

I take the opposite opinion. I think film gets so grimy so quickly, on a high use car, it just ends up looking terrible. I just live with it on my daily. On a special car, if you will drive it, an errant chip could become a real problem. The better films now days dont take too much away from the luminosity and depth of the color, it all depends on the prep. My Pista front end has taken a few chips- one which put a small crater in the film. If that was the paint, Id want to repaint the whole hood. Its really just how you view these things. The key thing is figure out how you view things and figure out what will work for you.
Isn’t that why some recommend ceramic over ppf? I did front on my DD lusso. Looks good still. Not arguing. Trying to figure on what to do. Most here send car on delivery to paint correction and ppf immediately was my sense ?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well, I will spare you the details, but IF you go PPF be sure the installer knows what they are doing, otherwise you will have to repaint the car since you could - like I did - end up with deep cuts into the paint that only a repaint can cure... I will never ever use PPF again!
Oh no, I am very sorry to read that! I wouldn’t blame you for feeling this way! Yes, there are risks with PPF. There are also risks with driving an 800hp RWD car- did you see the video with the guy who just loses it? The thread is a little inaccurately titled- as Marcel points out, its not the 812 that loses control, its the driver that loses control. PPF is entirely dependent on the installer. It is critical and thus, much much better to spend a little more on a top installer than try to cut a corner and then discover they’ve literally slashed up your paint or worse, when they pull it off, it pulls the paint with it- it can happen. As to the ceramic on PPF or just in general, my opinion is its great for making the PPF feel smooth and almost like having the clear coat, as opposed to the slightly rubbery feel of the film. Or just on your clear coat its nice to have as kind of like a super wax. But, on either, I find the visible and tactile benefits go away after a few months IF you are driving daily and in winter conditions with a lot of grime and junk on the road. Supposedly the ceramic coating does in fact remain, but the evidence of it, in my observations, goes away. Thus, my conclusion is for a car that you will drive daily, in all conditions, you are really best off with nothing extra and just drive it and don’t worry. On a Ferrari you plan to keep for a long long time and you are piling on the miles I might just film it and wait and see what happens after a few years. But my daily driver doesnt get anything. Just a visit to the local car wash every now and then. I put some good mileage on my cars and the fun cars are all filmed- front to back- everything- with ceramic coating. The coating makes washing and maintaining them easier because less debris sticks to the film and the “hydroponic” nature of the ceramic means the water from washing just rolls off like a crazy super wax. I use an automotive air drier and the water just flies away- its amazing. Much really does depend on you. I do drive my GTC4 Lusso in the winter, and I just make sure it wash and clean it off every few weeks- I won’t let it go more than 3 weeks. But its not really going out during the peak of a storm. I prefer to stay off the roads if I can to avoid the people who have no idea what they are doing. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
PPF can be done right, and it can be kept very clean. This is the front bonnet on my Lusso after todays cleaning. Like said before, it's a winter car, so it leads a hard life. What I do to keep it clean is the following. Rather than just washing with wool mitt or the like, I "wash" the PPF gently with a clay mitt. Here's my bonnet after two winters. Look at the lines on the reflected surroundings, they are sharp as a knife. Whether you have paint, PPF or ceramics, the result is down to your care. And also, the healing films like the Sunteks, are very good. The most obvious thing with my Lusso bonnet is the line in the middle. The bonnet is so big that they could not do it in one piece. Image Unavailable, Please Login A result like this is not easy or cheap though. The car had a massive paint correction done prior to getting the PPF. On a black car, do not EVER, PPF a paint that is not corrected. It WILL look terrible, and you do need to use a film that is self healing and as transparent as possible.
Too bad they couldn't do it in one piece for you, there are certain mnfr's that have large enough rolls. We use STEK which is coated and uses less adhesive so it wont pull paint. They also have the proper size to do your hood in one piece. I have my entire F12 covered which is my semi-daily, it takes about 10 minutes to wash as the dirt rolls right off because of the coating on the film.
We had a car come in (RR Wraith) that was cut up by a poor installer. We made the repairs and applied the film. You definitely have to be careful as to who you trust with your cars, there are some people out there that are not qualified to film a childs toy.
Well, let's be real. I see the line because I know it's there. Most are surprised when I tell them it is PPF'ed. The place I use have done it for over 20 years, and they are the go-to installer in my country. There are some very expensive metal wrapped there, including a 250 that was not a GTE to put it mildly, they know what they are doing. I know there are films that would cover, and Llumar/Suntek which I use, has a film that comes on a roll wide enough. But it would have changed the price substantially, and I'm perfectly happy with the result. I have tried a few films over the years, and Llumar is my choice. Super easy to keep and holds up well. No issues with paint and like the film you use, it is not like a 3M that might tear off the paint. Sent from my SM-G930F using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I used Xpel on the F12 and it did not provide wide enough coverage for the full hood to be filmed, and thus, the corner notches were exposed. Fast forward, with my 812, I used Suntek, which comes large enough for full coverage, no unsightly hood notches. All my cars have full coverage. I enjoy the extra piece of mind while driving on the interstate, but mainly, I just love how easy the cars are to keep clean. I do a proper wash only about once a year. Mainly it’s just a quick detailer and a microfiber towel that’s required.
Depends on you area. If you are in a metropolitan center and seeing busy highway use then ppf is a must. I even PPF the front badges on my cars because basically anything not protected will get blasted and chipped to pieces. I've had rocks hit the ppf so hard that it actually broke the ppf, luckily paint still good underneath. I don't even drive a crazy amount, about 2-3k km's per car per year. Do you research and find someone with a good reputation that specializes in exotics and has been around a while. You get what you pay for.
Stek is an amazing product with a 10 year warrant and Ive have zero issue with it other than it's more costly BUT you get what you pay for and I would ask to see pictures of cars they've wrapped. Also, I would want to speak to the owners about their opinions/experience with the detailers you use. It's gratifying for me to see one of my Ferrari's that has been wrapped and ceramic coated while watching the rain bubble up and literally fall of my Ferrari's. Just me ,02 cts!
