The optional wheel is machined from a solid piece of aluminum...

Some articles I’ve seen say they’re “forged from a single block of aluminum” (not machined). Machining is a secondary process.

Does anyone have insight on this? It would be unusual to mill an entire wheel from a large block of aluminum. I’m not even sure what the technical benefit would be since the forging process adds strength.

I just dont like the look of the optional wheels, and I think the standard ones look pretty good.

They are forged. I think some articles interchange machined and forged for some reason, but they are forged wheels.

The wording from the official Ferrari press preview "the larger 20/21-inch wheels, which are optionally milled from a solid block of aluminum". That was the report from what Ferrari told the journalists. Take of it what you will. The lead up to this was the stated 1,560kg dry weight; an increase of 35kg compared with the 812 Superfast.

    That’s also what I’m thinking.

    Base wheels = cast
Optional wheels = forged and machined

A lot of aftermarket wheels are cast - weaker and prone to cracking
Forging by adding heat and pressure can be done to a wheel to strengthen it or to a solid block of aluminum.Milling can also be done to finish a cast or forged wheel or done from a solid block of either cast or forged aluminum- the latter being much more expensive due to a lot of wasted aluminum that is milled away from the solid forged block.
So not sure here how it is done.
All Ferrari wheels of recent note I believe are forged- if not it’s a rip off for the price we pay for the wheels.
That being said- the standard wheel looks better IMHO

Not really. Just don’t like the way the two-tone line makes the car look. No forward sloping and makes it look long. Just my view though.

Saw it in person today at Ferrari Challenge at IMS. Posted a bunch of photos in the dedicated photo thread.

    Couple of initial thoughts/reactions:

    1. It's really big. Much larger presence/footprint than F12/812 in my opinion, but perhaps it was in part because they (coupe and spider) were just sitting by themselves inside the hospitality complex with no other cars around.

    2. It definitely looks and feels like a proper Ferrari in the flesh.

    3. Photos due no justice to this car. More so than any other recent Ferrari, many of which look much better in person. (Not suggesting design isn't 'polarizing', just that you definitely appreciate it more in the flesh)

    4. The black bits on front light bar and the flaps on the back/delta wing look much higher quality as far as paint/finish in the flesh than in photos. I took photos of them myself and they looked just like the ones I have seen from others on here...like crap. Something about the lens makes those parts look lower quality than they are in reality.

    5. The rear diffuser protruding so much makes much more sense when you see it live. There are some aero gaps/ducts that none of the photos I've seen to date show. I tried to capture these and posted photos in the other thread.

    6. Plenty of room for painted shields.

Glad I have an allocation but still not entirely sold. Need to see the driving reviews and hopefully get a test drive myself before I fully commit.

    Hope this is helpful.

Ah, I see! Took me a long time to settle on that. It was more for a love of the livery and colours that we chose it. The car’s story was an interesting.bonus. As a TM it’s a keeper for us. Will also do a TM on 12C spider (we didn’t on GTS and sold that). Could match the two and do a 50’s livery, or a 70’s one for the Daytona links. Perhaps.

Lovely car but not the colour for me though. For 12C, I’m not really sure what colour is for me to be honest. Don’t think I want red, don’t think I want silver/grey/black/white. Wife tends to resist green and last TM was blue! We have an appointment in December so there’s a little time.

I don't know, I feel like I shouldn't have to work that hard to appreciate a design. Particularly at that price.

If you see the front of the car and until the doors, it’s stylish, slim… then the rear end inflates reminding me of Shakira a few years ago: she was slim framed, and graceful until her hips, they were the size of an aircraft carrier.

It’s like the car has some sort of pregnancy…

Yeah. The car is certainly polarizing opinions and quite divisive.

I still have an order for one though.

It is known that Ferrari places dissenting and critical voices on a blacklist and that is why very few dare to publicly say what they think. However, this is not the case with the author of the attached article, but he, as a matter of precaution, also mentions "Please don't sue me".
