Top Gear magazine are the first to get a comparison test of the 12Cilindri and the Aston Martin Vanquish. Great article and I won't spoil the verdict...

Two wonderful, beautiful machines, each with its own characteristics. From the same GT category, but very different from each other.

See what he says from 7:30 to 7:55, about the SF90. The specialized press itself is starting to tell the truth about the directions taken by this management.

You should consider that those that lust for Ferrari want a Ferrari. Progressing away from its character including its sound is to place it out of why people buy and drive them and into the boring luxury GT market. Same as with its styling. This is likely to be a quickly forgotten car due to bad decisions.

Most people want the latest and greatest, not relics from the past. If people thought like that, Ferrari would be still producing the 250. An Italian Morgan then... Enzo used to say that the best Ferrari is yet to be made. He wasn't living in the past!!!

The FF and Lusso have generally been loved by owners. There’s nothing much wrong with building a GT. So long as it looks good, is comfortable and can keep you engaged when you turn off the motorway. The looks have been where most people have had an issue.

Astons have always looked and sounded like the Vanquish. The 12C represents something of a modern design, influenced but not framed by the past. Both look pretty great to me though the Vanquish seems so big.

Fair play to Aston, they seem to have made a great product - a good choice for those that want. I’m glad they did well. Most probably I wouldn’t buy one, mainly because of the missing DCT and lure of Ferrari’s V12, even if a little quieter than before.

Reapect to Jethro Bovingdon but the sum of the parts don’t really add up to his conclusion. But then, emotions are a lot in this kind of choice and just as legitimate as which is prettier, faster, smoother, rawer etc.

The sales book proves that no such thing is happening.

The preliminary information for 12 Cilindri emissions and fuel economy turned out to be true (353 g/km and 15.5 l/100km). The figures have been added to Ferrari official site.

The values of fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures refer to the WLTP cycle.

While increased weight, more powerful and higher revving engine and shorter lower gear have negative effect on lowers speeds, it is surprising how much the motorway cruising speed consumption has been improved. I assume the difference can't be explained alone with the new long 8th gear.

Added still the change percentages to the table. Quite interesting how dramatically the efficiency of 12 Cilindri improves when speeds get higher.

Given that maximum speed in WLTP test is 131.3 km/h, the possibly reduced drag probably doesn't make a big difference. But it may explain part of the improvement. I assume most of the difference comes from the use of 8th gear. The older NEDC test procedure used fixed gear shift points while the WLTP test procedure has free shifting points targeting normal driving conditions and the use of highest suitable gear. Therefore 12 Cilindri with the new significantly longer 8th gear gets advantage compared to 812SF with only 7 gears.

The effect of ATS (Aspirated Torque Shaping) remains mystery, but it concerns only the 3rd and 4th gears, so probably it does not affect so much, especially as the biggest difference is in Extra High cycle.

Torque has dropped significantly but this is apparently a direct result of more stringent emissions control equipment. I doubt Ferrari has opted to reduce torque on purpose to improve fuel efficiency, although ATS may actually do this as it softens the initial power delivery on 3rd and 4th gears.

    812 SF     718 Nm @ 6750 rpm
    12Cilindri   678 Nm @ 7250 rpm  ( -40 Nm, -5.6% )
