    Greetings,

I have discovered the headliner of my targa top is sagging over both the driver and passenger space. The foam has disintegrated allowing the cloth to fall. As such a simple respray of adhesive isn't going to work. The foam needs to be stripped before any repair can be made.

The cloth is still in very good condition and appears to have enough stretch in it to glue directly to the top even without a foam backing.

New materials that are a close match to the original with a foam backing will not have the leather/vinyl stitched edging and I would have to try to match it, as it is the part directly glued to the front and rear edge of the top.

Has anyone already found a fix to this problem?

How much would I really hurt the value of the car by replacing the original material to have a better fitted finish?

How much will it help or hurt to reuse the original material without a foam backing, knowing it will show more of the support contours of the top... ie not as clean a finished product but with the original cloth?

In the big scheme of things the top lives in its storage pouch behind the seats unless a surprise weather event catches me on the road.

Thanks in advance for thoughtful remedies and discussion.

I replaced the fabric on mine with the pleather/vinyl inserts instead. The pics are before and kind of after. The after pic is the only one I have on hand but that was what the upholstery shop made from a pattern off a friend's 308. It didn't last in any heat, but I was able to find a factory original part and installed the panels. Looks the same, just made a bit different.

    On an 82 probably zero.

The material is long gone. I believe I got the last roll of it in 2002 and I am not kidding either. I had it sag on me a few years back and a trim shop somehow fixed it. It's back up.

Honestly you car is probably worth more with a quality replacement than it is with a saggy stock headliner.

It looks here we will have very soon the black and white fabric: I saw the test fabric one week ago and looks great exactly like the original Zegna fabric. There already is the yellow and white fabric

The tan fabric is still available through re-originals, but they say they don't have much left. Better hurry.

Side track a bit, so how much material in meters you really need to replace all interior fabric in a B or S, including the headliner and above the rear firewall? Thx.

It's funny, I'm far from the garage queen mentality but now I know the cloth is from Zegna, I wouldn't want to replace it with anything else. Not least something non-Italian. Maybe I need to see a psychologist before this gets worse :)

That's too bad. I see the other place did as well. Bummer.

Striped inserts are original to carb 308s and match seat inserts. Neat look and much easier to reupholster inserts only instead of entire underside. One of the old tops I sold had these. I wish I had made a pattern.

I like the look of the black fabric. Will probably stay much cleaner.
