try to remove the locking ring nuts from gears so I can remove bell housing and replace the clutch. Exactly what kind of force is 180 newton-meters? This is the force needed to apply on this nut in order to remove it. I have used all my muscle strength possible and nothing happened. Is air impact wrentch the only way to do it? And should I have a pair of new nuts ready ?It looks like after I am done with them, both nuts will not be in good shape.

    thank you

Bend, or cut the tabs back from the locking nuts. Make sure all is clear, and then use a 1/2 breaker bar ( a long one ) on the nut. It is right handed so lefty is loosy. 120 foot lbs is what it is, but it takes much more to break it loose.

I have air impact wrench so I just zap it off with an ingersol rand gun.

You speak of 2 nuts? Are you planning on removing the top one? It does not need to be removed and every destroyed clutch shaft and gear I have ever fixed is because someone removed that nut needlessly. Leave it alone unless you need to replace the clutch shaft, gear or bearing.

Yes, it's best by far to use an air impact wrench.

With a long bar you've got a good chance of tearing up the nut AND your big $$ ring nut socket. The impact wrench's snap action breaks the nut loose with out there being time for things to bend due to the force being applied for a long time.

If there's just no way to get an air impact wrench, then try putting a substantial amount of tension on the breaker bar, make sure the socket is firmly seated on the nut, & smack the breaker bar about in the middle with a fairly large hammer. Be sure to keep the tension on the while. Again, the idea is for the impact to break the nut loose, not the steady state force.

I've got about a 2-lb short handled hammer that I used to use.

Then there's the old trick of wedging a piece of 4x4 between the end of the handle & the floor & lowering the jack, letting the weight of the car apply the force. Just make sure there's no way for the car to slip off of the jack. However, you're still back to lots of force slowly applied.
