    Just got my engine back in after a valve grind and now the 5-8 light is on even when the engine is not running. It's been on since the initial start up. The 1-4 light goes off within a few seconds of turning the ignition on without starting the engine. The car seems to run ok, so could there be a bad connection somewhere?

    Yes. Try swapping the two warning light ECUs (which will also give you an opportunity to inspect/reseat/clean the connections) to see if the bad self-test behavior follows the ECUs or not.
