I have an 83 308 qv with an interesting issue I'm trying to sort out. Car starts fine and sounds good, but after driving for about 10 min. it starts sputtering and backfiring and running really rough. If you turn the car off for about 5 min. it starts again fine and will run for 5 min. or so and then do the same thing again. Any ideas?? Could it possibly be a fuel filter or something? Just trying to figure out a place to start looking.

    Thanks!

So sounds like its heat related. Would suggest something electrical that gets a bit freaky when its warm. Crank sensors or ignition coils would be a guess. OTOH Might be something simple like a coil - distributor lead.

Start by checking all the electrics around the coils. Pull all the connections out , clean them & recpnnect & then work away from there.

Check for spark (inductive pickup timing light is a good way to do it) & see if you can isolate it down to either one or more cylinders or an entire bank.

Also do some simple stuff like check none of the plug lead extenders havn't burned through. Pull the spark plugs & make sure none of them are broken/cracked etc. They might also give you a clue as to which cylinders are misfiring.

You may be right. It may be that your fuel filter is dirty, so it gets clogged and cuts out. Once the fuel clears, you're fine again.

    fuel related most likely.
