83 Mondial Cab battery charge and idle problems

    I have an 83 Mondial QV cabriolet I bought off ebay back in March. My original plan was to get it fixed professionally, but in April I got filed with divorce papers, and now I am broke. Can't afford to fix it, but can't drive it or find an interested buyer for it until it is fixed. Its a real dilema. The only solution seems to be to fix it myself, but I have never really worked on cars myself, always used a mechanic in the past. That said, I've resolved to do the best I can to fix it myself, even thought I know I am in way over my head. I would certainly appreciate any troubleshooting advice for a mechanical novice like myself trying to do this work on his own without any technical manuals or diagrams.

    The main problem at the moment is the battery does not charge. I thought it was probably the alternator, so I had it bench tested, but it turned out okay. When I had it up for sale. someone sent me an email and said it was likely a fusebox problem, but others told me it might be a bad ground or bad voltage regulator or bad wiring. This is the only mechanical issue that is really preventing me from actually using the car as a daily driver. I really need to get it figured out, but my electrical expertise consists of changing lightbulbs. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this problem?

    Another more minor electrical problem is that the running lights stay on all the time, but I think I may have that figured out and it seems to just be an issue with the switch on the blinker lever. If I wiggle with it long enough, it will turn into a position that makes the running lights go off. The problem is that any vibration or wiggle moves it out from that certain position, and the lights are back on again. Ugh! Is there anyway to get the knob to "stay" in the off position?

    The electrical windows don't work. The front ones worked (just barely) back when i got the car, but don't now. The back windows didn't work when I bought it. I want to get this fixed so I can let the top down when Spring gets here. I read a post on how to troubleshoot this. Apparently it is a fairly common problem. Does anyone have a diagram showing which fuses control the windows? I wanted to check them first before started to pull off door panels and digging deeper into the problem.

    When the battery is trickle charged up, the car actually runs okay until the battery dies again, except for one issue. If you crank it and just let it sit and idle, it will sometimes stall out. This only happens until it the car warms up. Once it warms up, it is fine. A local mechanic that I asked about it said it was probably an issue with the carbs adjustment, but I found out since then that the car doesn't even have carbs... When I ran a for sale ad on the car, someone that actually seemed to know about these cars emailed me said it was probably a problem with the fuel injectors instead. From his message it sounded like I need special diagnostic equipment to play with those. Any thoughts on anything I might be able to do myself to try to keep it from stalling when it sits and idles after a cold start? I certainly can't afford expensive equipment or mechanic services. Hopefully this is something I could do myself with some guidance. Otherwise, I will have to learn to live with it.

    On top of these problems, it wasn't garaged kept. As a result, the paintjob is sunfaded out and the backseat upholstery got really badly baked and the leather peeled up. My main concern at the moment is the battery charging and the stalling when idling. If I can get that resolved, I could at least drive it while I save my pennies to get the cosmetic work done by professionals in a few years. Are there any companies that sell decent looking seat covers that I could use to temporarily cover the mangled backseats until I can afford reupholstery?

    I am really torn about this car. Always wanted a Ferrari. Now I finally have one and it does not make me a happy camper to see it collecting dust knowing I can't get it really fixed up the way I would like it anytime soon. Some days I am giddy with excitement about the prospect of eventually getting it fixed up. Other days I wish I had never bought the darn thing. Hopefully I can at least the battery charging issue fixed so that I can at least drive it further than a couple of miles. Wish me luck.

    Sorry I can't provide any pragmatic advice on the issues you mention, but I do wish you luck in your predicament. However, if you don't have much experience working on cars and lack familiarity with auto electrical systems, my advice is to sell it "as is", and let the marketplace place a value on the car. Most probably you won't get much for it, but at least you will get something, and you will be able to move on....that's what divorces are all about. Best of luck.

    I am sorry to hear about your situation, but it just doesn't sound like you have the mechanical aptitude to do the diagnostic and repair work yourself. You may end up making things a whole lot worse. Also, this doesn't sound like a good time in your life to be fussing over a temperamental exotic with the parts bills to match. Chalk it up to a loss and revisit the Ferrari thing once your divorce is comfortably behind you. I would add that you should probably wait until Spring to sell, as the market for convertible sports cars is usually dead this time of year.
