After checking TDC, it continued to nag me as I (minimally) rotated the engine. As you may recall, the car was in storage while I was working overseas.

After a lot of pondering, this is my pre-lube rig assembled to get lube throughout the oiling system.

In the past, the pistons had been hit with fogging oil. Once the engine was out, that fogging was followed up with a squirt of Marvel Mystery oil. Easy to do -

The pics show a dash 16 AN fitting and hose clamped to the oil filter threads. After searching high and low, I gave up on finding an AN fitting with matching threads (1" 24 tpi) for the oil filter mount.

The pumps are bypassed with the downstream oil filter mount. After filling the (VERY) clean hose, it was mated up to a SureShot oiler to provide pressure (100 psi) through the SureShot's very small orifice. The dash 16 plug had to be drilled and tapped for the 3/8" x 24 tpi thread to match the SureShot hose.

Overall it worked very well. Almost 2qts were pumped through the engine while it was rotated VERY slowly. It took awhile to get oil to the upper cam bearings - but the oil immediately flowed from the lower cam bearings.

The vacuum pump was plugged off with a bit of RTV. The flourescent ribbon is attached to make me remember to remove it!

Now I can move on to the cam timing (baseline check comes first) without worry!

Is any prelube necessary on a previously running engine ...either before or major ?

    what you understand under prelube?
of course when the camshafts are out and you clean all before put them back again you may put oil on the bearing points. also to the seals

This engine literally sat for years. The cyl had beed fogged before storage so no problem there. The oil galleys had no doubt drained dry over time.... the pre-lube was needed to get oil throughout the system prior to rotation DURING the service. The cylinders were also hit with a fresh shot of Marvel Mystery Oil before rotation as well. It was a precautionary step and totally not required on an engine that had been run soon before the service.

At post service startup, I plan to rotate the engine with the starter while plugs & fuel pump fuses are removed.

If we are talking few days, or even a few weeks... likely none of these steps would be warranted.

    YMMV
