I've noticed a small pin hole this morning. Could this be repaired or should it be replaced?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The rust is typically from the inside out. Chances are a repair will only be temporary. I had a leaking tank on my 81 308 and soldered a repair - it lasted a year or two. I then took it to a radiator shop - they patched the leaks but it looked ugly and didn't last any longer than my repair. I ended up ordering a new aluminum one from Superformance - it's way better made than the oem, looks fantastic, is inexpensive and a perfect fit but only has a port for one thermal switch. I don't know if an 84 has one or two switches. My 81 originally had two switches but since most of the emissions have fallen off now only needs one.

I would call Patrick @ www.ferrparts.com and ask him what would it cost for one off the 308's that they are parting out right now.

Due to expansion and contraction (Oil caning) they crack there. No fix I have seen will work permanently.

I made a temporary repair to mine by cleaning off the paint and soldering a penny (coin) over the hole. However as I cleaned off the paint I found a line of pin holes that related to top water line.

I bought a tank, but when it came it was a Mondial tank. The vendor said it was the same and sure enough it would bolt into place and fit, BUT it had a 20mm hole in the top to take a level sensor. So now instead of an old tank with pin holes, I had a new tank with a huge hole!

In the end I got an aluminium tank manufactured from my drawings by a company that does custom stuff for Subaru / hot hatch cars. They made quite a nice job of it and even tried to replicate the original indent lines to give it a bit of character. I also got the overflow made up as a fixed link pipe, much neater.

I has made a huge difference to have a new filler cap and proper coolant pressure.

Call them but ask about a new one....why get another one that may leak shortly thereafter?

if you have a problem I'm sure they'll swap it back or your money back. the cars that I've seen there have been in fires or wrecks.I saw one there three days ago and looked new enough for me to save money and buy a used one but thats me:D
