Does anyone knows how or where to add the oil on the QV horn compressor? I've looked at three 84 QV and one 85 QV and they all doesn't have the red cap on top, no provision to add oil, but I do see the red cap on the earlier 308.

Mike, I think you pull off a hose to add oil if there is no oil cap.

Really? That's going to be hard without removing the compressor off.

Mine wasn't working when I first got the car. I just hosed it with WD and it was fine. No idea if that is kosher with the Fiamm people.

That's the only way I know how to do it. Add a few drops of air tool oil or 3-2-1.

Mike...maybe I'm thinking it's more of an effort than it really is, however, it looked like a PITA to get to the horn compressor to add oil. Yes / No?

I think you're right. Aim also thinking about replacing it with the one that has the red cap on top but it's not original.

When I was looking at mine, I removed the passenger side slatted piece (can't think of official name of part), removed the black metal cover under the slatted piece...and still could not get to horn compressor. Looked through the front grill and can remember thinking "wow...that'll be a PITA to service!".

I was wanting to remove, service, place new decals, etc.

I wonder if synthetic oil will work.

I took my horn compressor completely out when I had the grille out doing other things on my 84, and took the top off of the housing and put air tool oil in it. Surprisingly loud when it's in 100% working order. If you do it that way, be very careful not to let the little fins inside drop out. They aren't held in by anything but gravity once the top comes off.

I went through the hose. I used synthetic air tool oil. Worked like a champ and restored the horn note to perfection.

air tool oil, no reason to complicate it. Reason is simple, the compressor is the same setup you'll find in thousands of air tools. The vanes are free to move about, engines oils are too thick and will gum up. Rebuilding them is dead simple and not complicated.

On mine it didn't have the oil cap either and it was non-functioning, so I pulled it apart and rebuilt it. Took no time at all. It was gummed up inside, like an old carb.

Excellent idea. Here goes: personally, I prefer Triflow because it is a Teflon lubricant. However, I have never sent a used sample to Blackstone Lab for analysis.

No lube port on mine either; just took off the top and dribbled a little in. After lubeing, it was back up to factory-spec 40 dB. Probably a better way to get attention is to roll down the window (if they work), stick your head out and yell at the car in front of you (probably more in the Italian spirit anyway). I am seriously flirting with installing red Hella Supertones.

Giving this a bump as I had the same issue. Could hear the motor running on the compressor but no horn.

A few squirts of air tool oil and back in business.

Can't support the Canadian Truckers without my horn! :)
