True, but if you want a 100 point car, you need the correct frame. There are people on the field that know the difference.
Yes, starting with the QV. Any black fender vents you see over here on the 2V cars were ALL painted by an owner
I've been to three shows already and rifledriver judged two of them and the frame that mike c has is correct to use.
This is incorrect. I remember this topic before, might have been with you. I have pics taken from 78-82 from Algar Ferrari here in PA that show very few, but some, new stickered cars with black vents. At least two of these cars are being offloaded off of transporters upon delivery in my pic collection. Also, Phil Tegtmeier, who was the sales manager at Algar during that period (and is now the chief concours judge in our FCA region now) says he remembers clearly the OCCASIONAL ordering of a car with this due to a client request. Not frequent at all he reports, but not one-off either. Like boxer trim, would be ordered, and did not appear on the sticker when the car arrived. Do I think that these cars were very few and far between, yes, absolutely. But to say uncategorically that ALL were done by an owner, like most ALL/NONE statements regarding Italian anything, is wrong. Art Late ' 82 308 GTSi (Body colored fender vents !)
OK, so it was a special order item, but in closely following 308's for 28 years I never saw one like that from the factory back in the day. If nothing else it is very very unusual and MANY have painted theirs now.
Actually on the front fender vents, I'd suspect two different part numbers. The ones I have painted are paintable metal, primed and finished. The black ones I have are black ANODIZED, exactly like the rear engine hatch louvers, and not painted at all.... Maybe Ricambi can shed light on this....but a black anodized one I'd consider original, while a black painted one would tend to be a field modification. I always had read the fender vents went black when the vent louvers were added to the front hood for cooling....1980? 1981? My blue 1977 308GTB was unsold at Ron Tonkin at the time, and got black anodized fender louvers and the rear spoiler updates to 'match' the then current car's in appearance. So I always saw it as a calendar year thing not a market driven item. All the early marketing Factory photos of the early 1975 -1979 cars they are body colored..
DrTommy, Mustard FJ, I would love to post them, but no one around me out in the hills of PA here has a scanner. I guess I could always go to a Kinko's or whatever, have them scanned and then E mailed to myself or put on a zip, which probably isn't a bad idea anyway for preservation's sake. A couple of them even show me in all my buck-teeth and tube-sock glory standing next to them, a real treat. Stay tuned, I guess I can find a way to get it done. And I'm curious, on my ' 82 assuming it's original, are those red fender vents metal or plastic ?? They FEEL like metal, but I've never spent much time examining them. I thought I remember black anodized ones on QV's that looked to be plastic, with a mold line at the end of each vent blade ?? Did the actual material change ?? Thanks, Art
Both metal, aluminum I'd guess (in my case) but the anodized ones feel thinner somehow.. I need to get my cars together, so direct comparisons aren't so hard!!
Do like me, take a digital picture of your picture (on the macro setting) and just upload that. I do it all the time and it works fine
Here is an example of my taking a picture of an old picture from a thread I started a while back. Turns out pretty good. That's an 82 308 and the picture was taken by me in Aug of 83 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145939
Okay guys question... Should the "dog bone" be black on a late 85' (June build) or was it replace with chrome to "dress up" the engine room? The winter Park show is in early November. Check it out at www.winterparkconcours.com. Not a FCA event but there are a good number of them there. The judging is strict, so if the car does good there, Cavallino should be no problem.
Thanks. Battery light a bit to the right and slow down light a bit to the left... already done just have not taken the picture yet.
