I am replacing one of my CV joints on my 85 308 QV, and I am having difficulty installing the new replacement onto the shaft spline. It seems that the new CV joint will go on about half way by hand and then stop. Both of the old CV joints came off easily when you removed the clip, and go back on easily. I am concerned about needing to install the new CV joint using any force to get them on, for fear of it becoming stuck and unable to be removed. The CV joint the I purchased was for a Porsche 930. Has anyone had trouble with newly purchased CV joints installing onto the shaft spline.

I read many of the postings on CV joints , but I only found some mention of having difficulty removing a CV joint from the shaft spline. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've done a few and seen smooth easy assembly, and others that I used a gear pull to get them moving. On re-assy, I've seen them tight, then given them a few taps with a plastic hammer and they would get past a tight spot then slide into place. I've never seen and would not feel comfortable if it was a tight press all the way home. There's that Bellville spring washer that keeps compression on the CV inner drive against the clip. If it gets scary, you can bring just the axle to a Ferrari mechanic to help on this part.

One other thing to watch for is the boot attachment. Getting the clip tight on the large end is important to keep grease from slinging out. At high speed, this makes a mess.
