Howdy, I noticed a Ferrari at auction locally, a 1985 GTSi with 27k miles on it is being storage auctioned in Sterling, VA this Sunday. Here's the link: http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionview.cgi?lid=996607 I did call and they said a bit of work had been done recently. I have enough to deal with. Personally, I am excited about driving a new (for me) 1973 365GT4 2+2, and plan on driving it, as well as maintaining it properly. Cheap compared to my aerobatic plane. One of my best friends is one the most prolific commentors on this forum, lives and breathes Ferrari. I hope to learn much from this forum on taking care of the new (again to me) 12cyl beast.

I've got the same year and make of the car. As such, I've been documenting these specific cars (85 308 GTS), similar to the 308 register.

I called about possibly providing them with information on the car but they declined my offer. I then asked what the last 5 digits of the VIN were. They said they didn't have it.

So, if anyone can take a few photos and send me the VIN, I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Kevinwi

why would you not pay storage on a QV , and allow it to be taken?

How would you get a clean Title to the car?

they get a lien title for it and transfer it to you.
    Just like a mechanics lien.

The term, "I own a Ferrari" and the term, "I own a home" have come to be so watered down, that they really have no meaning anymore. Perhaps the guy/girl that owned the 308 financed it thru an auto loan, or maybe a home line of credit, and thus had no real skin in the game, thus the first sign of financial trouble, or the 308 being worth less than he/she paid, and they just stopped paying the loan, and the storage. Also, they could have just died:( It happens to the best of us.

Nothing pisses me off more than people who say, I own a house. Yeah, right. You put 3% down, and it costs 10% to sell it due to tranfer taxes and realtor fees. So you own -7% house the day you "bought" it. We need a new term for real ownership, and debt ownership. OK, I'm done now.

In Maryland it's not too hard to request a title from MVA, as long as you can show the legal trail. i.e., the storage place had right to sell based on signed contract, and you bought it from them, but it can take months to process, so people won't pay as much for the car. A friend of a friend got title to a MB 300D, that was left in the garage of a house he got at auction this way.

Title is not going to be that simple. The storage facility has a right to sell the car (via contract) to recover the fees owing. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are capable of passing along a clean title to the auction winner.

Presumably, the storage fee lien will be paid off at close of sale. But, if you bid on this car be aware that you may well be buying a car subject to another party's (the original owner) interest, and where your interest lies (subordinate or senior) may depend on facts and circumstances or state law.

THAT was exactly my point. If the owner had the cars title somewhere else, and moved, died, whatever, then the storage place has no clean title to the car. worse yet: somebody buys the car, finances it, cant pay the loan, and hides it in the storage place.

so now the car is still held under a lien, to another party. Georgia is easy on many fronts as far as registration goes. One thing they will NOT bend on, is that you must have a title to a car made 1985 or after. No title , your not going to drive the car.

so unless the auction guys have a Title in hand, this QV better be super cheap, and sold to someone who can go through a Title Bonding Company.
Shame how these cars end up sometimes.

Someone who knows what they are doing should be able to lookup any liens fairly easily, if they had the VIN. The fact that the storage place wouldn't give Kevenwi the VIN might mean they don't what anyone to look.

So, I guess my opinion has changed from my previous post. This car would be a parts car purchase, and that would only be true if someone paid cash and didn't give any name/address to the storage place at purchase.

I can see it now, someone gets this thing, takes it home, and the repo man steels it from their driveway in the middle of the night.

BTW, Sunday will be cold and raining, so that should limit the turnout, thus limit the price. Could be good for someone who needs an engine, assuming it's in good shape. I would assume they don't have the keys, so can't easily be started either.

    ref :
    Application Requirements

You must represent a vehicle towing, recovery, repair or storage business to be eligible for an MSL. Self-storage facilities are not eligible for an MSL because their primary business is to store personal items, not vehicles only.

ok, so a "self storage place" cannot get a mechanics lien title. that would mean they have no keys, and no title.

Does not mean its not a good buy, but my next question is : if someone buys this car, and parts it out, would they be liable for civil and criminal damages, as they knowingly hid the car from a legal lien holder, and purposely chopped the car up?

seems to me one can get in deep trouble quickly with a deal like this.

seems to me the lien holder better show up to bid on the car, or they could just pay the storage fees and resell the car as they hold legal title.

this is all assuming the car has no title and keys. :)

i hope one of you guys gets the car. I would love a QV, just not a red one.

Man I would think the bank would already know about it.
I guess it depends on the laws that storage facilities have for selling the cars.
