With the way Ebay fees work these days I kind of think a good deal for anything will be hard to come by. At least there is a $5000 refundable core charge.
I guess that's how I'm going to describe my TR when I sell it -- "For sale: TR gearbox & diff + the rest of the car"
Ya, it's outragous, but I figured someone might need one and be able to talk to these guys. Oh well...
Nothing wrong with your original post -- I like getting the data (so keep doing that). In a way, it makes me feel like a genius, because if my gearbox or diff ever explodes, I'm going to have no regrets at all selling the remaining bits of my daily driver TR to one of the F salvage yards -- it's the guys with the prisitine GQ TRs who get forced into spending the ~$20K to protect their remaining "investment" .
Will be hard to find a buyer at that price. Hats off to Ted for continuing to scare away more potential TR buyers and devalue the TR even more with those kind of prices.
Well, I bought this from Ted (over a year ago) when my diff blew (price was similar to ebay auction). Also had transmission problems so this was an appropriate (albeit expensive) solution. Was cheaper than having FOCF rebuilding them. It is definitely a major expense for a TR, but I was not going to sell / part-out mine so I bit the bullet. ps - tranny is still smooth as butter...
Step one. Sweep up all of the pieces. Step two. Fit them together Step three. Weld it all up. Seriously - I hope I never need to to deal with this!
For more details on my tranny / diff repairs check this thread out... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112201
Personally I Would like to see a casing which looks like someone actually cared when they rebuilt the unit. It looks like there is still alot of residual grime on this one. But hey, what would you want fo $21,950 + shipping.
Hello I heard the gear box on ebay was being sold by Trutlands. I had a HORRIBLE experience buying a gear box from them this Summer. Long story and I'm not one for total mud-slinging. If anyone is interested in buying it and wants to know what to watch for. Give me a call or a PM. The gear box I bought off of them was a dud when they guaranteed it wouldn't be and they wouldn't do anything about it. I have to take the whole thing out again. On a lighter note. I am currently having a crown and pinion made for me. Should be done in 2 weeks. Finally found someone who could make one. Talk to you soon. Brent
I just visited ebay and had a look at the gear box. It is exactly what I would expect from Ted. When I called in August they told me the price of that gearbox was $16 500 NOT $21 500 After my experiences, I would doubt that it is even upgraded or rebuilt. They told me mine had an upgraded diff from the factory. Now they are saying "that's what they were told from they guy they bought it from and can't be held responsible". Didn't mention that as they were punching in my credit card numbers.......I could go on and on about the experience but I'm probably starting to sound like a bitter jerk. Because of my bad experience dealing with him, I spent countless hours on the internet, calling overseas and I finally found someone in my own backyard who has a tremondous amount of experience making the crown and pinion gear for sports cars. He is over half way through making mine for the TR and I have my hopes up. He is very confident that he will be able to make me a "perfect" gear set. He tells me it's his specialty. When I get it back and set it up, I will post the results. Take care, Brent.
Great going Brent for finding a source for those gears! I'm sure speak for MANY when I say we'd love to hear how things turn out. I hope they are smooth and quiet! Best of luck Brent...and keep us posted.
Im glad you brought this up, what TRutlands did to you is wrong. After you put the so called updated box in and we went for a drive I needed 2 hands to get it into 2nd and the gear howl was rediculous. You paid top dollar for that box and paid $500 additional to have them inspect it and it was given the green light. No easy task to re and re that box and you put in one that was worse than the one you took out. Im glad the gear supplier can help then you can save the other box and recoup some of your cost.
This outcome of this story is very disappointing, particulary considering Ted's long-standing reputation in the Ferrari community and the "expert" he uses to rebuild these transaxles. Having rebuilt my fair share of Ferrari transaxles, there is no "half right", or cheap rebuilds; they must be done correctly, else the results become unuseable very quickly... I wish you the best of luck in getting your car sorted out... Regards, David
another amazing deal, here you go David you'll need one soon..... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rebuilt-Transaxle-For-Ferrari-365-GT4-BOXER_W0QQitemZ350127255467QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item350127255467&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
Hello everyone!! just bought a 88 testarossa in the UK , drove it to Portugal!! From what i read here this is the biggest problem on the TR!!!! Any advice on how to use the car to avoid the problem , any special year of the car that can suffer with this problem? Thanks to all
Dont do burnouts, they all have the same problem unless internally upgraded to the 512M differential carrier.
Portogts - There are few facts, but many opinions. I believe that this issue (the carrier failure) is overstated. Yes, a few have failed, and yes, this likely represents a defective weld in a handful of cars. Early cars (all but the latest 512 TRs and Ms) had a welded ring-gear carrier versus a solid piece. It is likely, in my opinion, that you will see fewer and fewer catastrophic failures of this ring gear carrier. I take this position for two reasons. First, as the mileage increases on all of the cars currently on the road, those that were prone to fail have done so. There will be a diminishing number of failures as those defective welds laid down by Mario on Monday morning (September, 1985) find their way to the repair shop. This is the Darwinian theory of ring gear failure. Only the fit survive, and those with a mutation not providing survival benefit are doomed to eventually be removed from the population. Second, awareness of this issue has led to a much more conservative approach to driving in those that own Boxers and Testarossas/TRs. The key to avoiding failure is to avoid aggressive, high-torque, high-load, rubber burning acceleration from a stop. Wider, better adhesion tires might, indeed, contribute to failure. Yes, there have been a few failures in cars that were not accelerating, or that were treated well by the current owner, but there is little history as to previous owner's clutch behavior. And, as mentioned above, a defective weld may/will fail independent of driving patterns. My opinion...not worth much. Jim S.
I agree with the 2 opinions , as it´s my first Ferrari i tend to be drive it with some atention. Is the F512m gearbox and diff usable on the testarossa? All the best
You just need the M carrier and I would drive it worry-free. On the boxer models though for me to drive worry-free I need to upgrade my sodium exhaust valves and the carrier, not a cheap venture.
