My daughter's dad has an 86 P 944 which she was going to use will he is out of town for the week. However the water temp gauge was in the lower yellow section. It was a short drive from his house to ours. Its in the garage now and she will use my car. Nobody has Haines manuals in stock here in Seattle that I found. There wasn't even an owners manual in the glove box. The coolant recovery tank is full, a little above max. The upper rad hose gets hot so its probably not the thermostat. I will check the w/p and belts tomorrow. Do you have any advice? The only manuals I have are Ferrari's. I didn't know German cars could malfunction. Ha Ha. Any help would be appreciated.

Keep the air conditioner on, even if it's cold, just have the a/c on.
Freind has an 86T, will overheat ONLY if the a/c is not on. Seems the electric fans won't come on with out the a/c on.

You may have an air lock, there is a bleeder at the top front of the engine, warm car and open bleeder, helps also to raise the front or park on a hill.

Thank you for the bleeder info. Is there a specific procedure to bleed system? Running probably and heater on? I assume its the bolt on the thermostat housing.

944's are prone to overheat...The fans should come on without A/C...check the fuse if they do not...944 get hot easy...Make sure coolant is proper with a float..There is a seal in the oil coooler that if it gets too hot will leak coolant into the oil and visa versa...Messy $500 repair...There is a bleeder screw on top as said above if you have air..Check your overful tank..How does the coolant look and read??

Thanks everyone for the tips. I received more help here than from PorscheChat via the POC. I signed up to ask Porsche experts about this car. I got one response! FerrariChat rocks!
I found the Haines P944 manual today and will check all the tips now that I have a referance for the procedures.

    Thanks Philip

I have owned a couple of these over the past 7 years and know lots of other local owners and no, overheating is not an issue with these cars, as with any pressurized system it needs to be maintained properly thats all.

I disagree. Overheating is a common quirk with 944's

No more overheating and thanks for your help. I don't know a thing about German cars. I have my car back.
