I am new to the site and have been absorbing all the great info. I don't know how to post a direct link (maybe someone else can) but here are the details (as a neophite sees it) -

1987 328 GTS, 9340 miles, looks in really good shape (from the limited pics) and is red with good records (it states). The current bid is up to 46,800.

The belts were done in April 0f 1999 at 6000 miles.

My question is - Doesn't this car need major service (al least belts) and does the price seem high? I thought this site was giving me a handle on this but this seems out of whack (again to a rookie)

    bid # is 4612496801

    any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for the insight - Dave

IMO, Ebay isn't the best place for a 328 GTS. There are better places to find what you are looking for. Try the various sites that have classifieds or look for who might be sellling on this site (that's how I found my car last year).

The thing that sticks out the most on this car is the milage. Why only 9K miles? For an '87 that's extremely low. A car of that age should be in the 20s or 30s from a milage perspective. So if you are interested in this vehicle, look to get a PPI.

As far as the belts, usually it's 5 years or 15K miles. Based on the date of the last change, it's time.

Fair price to pay for an '87 is the low to mid 40's.

    Good luck.

The 328 I bought had 9000 miles on it and was also an 87, I bought it December 2002. The one on e-bay has better records than mine did plus the sticker which was missing on mine. Mine was the best 328 I could find at the time. I had a major service done to it immediately upon receipt due to the lack of records.

I would budget for a major for this car on ebay since it has been 7 years since it had one. I paid a bit north of where the bidding is as I write this, but well south of the reserve. I believe it was worth to pay up for a car as nice as I ended up with. When I was searching, everyone said I should pay $40k to $45k, what I found was that you could not find a really clean car in that price range with less then 20k miles on it. I think that the "experts" were a little low on what a nice car cost at the time (not sure where the market it now, I suspect the same spot more or less as when I bought mine).

My reservation is that this car is on e-bay and in my opinion, you must inspect the car yourself and have a pre-purchase inspection done (which you should also witness if you can). Based on my experience, I think that if you can get it for less than $50k, it would be worth it on account of the low miles (assuming you can verify milage), records, tools, etc, etc. YOu will have paid a premium, but in my epxerience worth it. Some here will tell you not to buy such a low milage car, I disagree with them. My car is super reliable, looks great and is a great car. I am a happy camper.

It took me a little bit over a year to find what I was looking for, but it was well worth the wait/search. My car now has 17k miles on it, and by the end of the year, I will have put more than half of all of the miles on the car.

    Good luck.

    Alberto

gotta love it - 15 minutes later I get answers - you obviously don't work for me.

MJ - just hunting on e-bay and I think your price seems more inline considering the belts. There must be a heck of an e-bay premium for the low miles.

Alberto - definately doing a PPI. Great to hear about your car. I've thought about it for awhile and have always loved the style of the 3X8s. This site convinced me the 328 is the latest and greatest of the series and have always liked the styling.

Additionally they seem the most reliable and cheapest to maintain to high standards - that basically did it for me. I am actually looking for a black one over the red but red is classic (obviously) so will do in a pinch - lol.

Another reason - ever hear the 328 dyno run on one of the file sharing sites?
    OMG!

I agree with the above posts about eBay being a risky place to buy a not-too-new Ferrari. You can't research this car in the next 14 hours. If it doesn't sell you could contact the seller, go look at the car, arrange a PPI, etc. There are many reputable Ferrari mechanics in that area who could do this.

I spent 11 months searching for the right 308/328, and ended up buying a black metallic/tan '87 328 with 22K miles last month. The current bid is a very realistic price for this car, IMO, given that it will need another approximately $4K in service right away even with a perfect PPI report. A fully and properly serviced '87 328 with 10K real miles is a good deal at $50K, and probably very fair dealer retail would be mid-$50K's. Problem is, I would want to know a lot about the car before paying that much.

In my experience, a 328 in the low $40K range needs servicing plus some amount of other catch-up.

    Thoughts:

    1. Is this car great enough to be worth backing up 10 feet to get a decent photo of the nose? How 'bout the passenger side? (We're talking $56K here...) Does the engine lid open? Can we see 1 photo of the engine bay -- which is a GREAT place to look if you want to see how a car's been cared for. I had high-res photos taken of the engine bay and underside of my car on a lift before I put down a deposit to hold it.

    2. The car has been everywhere - Miami, San Francisco, Providence, Utah. Nothing inherently wrong, but it's a mild yellow flag that it keeps getting sold to strangers.

    3. Why is this car parked in what looks like a leaky slum garage? Given that not all garages are nice, how much effort is it to start the car, back it up and get a picture that doesn't look like it's a prison shot from Papillon?

    4. A huge stack of receipts is a plus, but it looks like the last important work was done 7 years ago. It's not the size of the stack so much as what was done when.

    5. If you want a black one, buy a black one. I feel like I'm coming out of the closet here, but after I looked at red, black, black metallic, blu chiaro and white, I decided 328's look best in darker colors. "Resale red" is worth a premium if you like it. Otherwise... it's not.

Looks like a nice 328. The interior looks to be in great shape.

Does the bike parked so close to the car worry anyone else besides me??

If you are seriously interested, I would send the seller an email through Ebay to let him know that if the car does not sell through Ebay you may be interested in pursuing it after the auction closes. And don't feel like you have to go along with the high bid that did not meet the reserve / could not complete the sale . There is a ton of shill bidding on Ebay that helps sellers place an artificially high price on items that are never intended to sell to the high 'bidder'.

This site is great at feedback - Rob will get a check shortly

Bullfighter - thanks for the link. Yea I noticed it has slept around and considering the maintenence needed and garage its kept in it has given me pause.
Prison scene from Papillon - LOL!
You have the car I want!

Chairo - yea noticed the bike too - I guess some things bother some more than others.

Boa - great looking car - scary looking garage!

BT348 - thought about the shill bidding - thats why I thought it was high for a needing belts car that hasnt been drivin much in 6 years, but the bidders seem pretty varied.

The garage isn't frightening. I have seen plenty of gorgeous older homes with shabby garages.

The car looks nice, may be an OK buy. Why the Illinois plates, though?

... because someone bought a Ferrari and didn't keep it long enough for the old plates to expire?

Sorry, my spider (or spyder) sense is tingling.

I'd worry about out of state plates too. To me, raises some kind of question about title and ownership.

The car does look very clean, but 9000 miles in 19 years equals 474 miles a year. Seems like it might have been sitting a lot during those years, with attendant problems that can result (belts, seals, hydraulics, internal corrosion). Michael Sheehan writes about this kind of thing regularly in SCM, including in the most recent issue.

I'd also wonder why it needed a new clutch at 8000 miles.

As mentioned, all good points for a PPI.

The buy it now price of $55,900 is way to high....personally I think the current bid is high, but that's just my opinion. The low mileage and the color combo are nice, but for that money you can deal on a nice low mileage 89. Before I sold my 87 328 I was quoted a minimum starting price of $4,900 for the 30k service.

I think I found the other garage funny because it was completely empty & they could have put the bike anywhere - Or heck, at least moved it for the pics. :)

milstan - Didn't notice the Illinois plates - So its been in Salt Lake, Miami, Los Gatos, New England and now Illinois titled and no mention of that - As Bullfighter says spidy sense is tingling.

Watry - Clutch is a good question - How long is norm on a 328 anyway (assuming sane driving?)

Mark328 - Its almost 48K now with the 30 K service that 53K out the door. And I'm sure it would need some other items (if only a good detail, exhuast ect.) for me to be happy - not worth it.

Yahoo (Porsche dealer), has a black/tan 1987 328GTS with 36k miles, doesn't state service history except that it needs tires and it sat for the past 4 years. Asking price $34,999 may be a great deal if they take an offer.

I bought my car with 6400 miles on it. It is an 89 328 GTB. It was purchased by the previous owner. Three years ago with 200 mile on it. He did a major service on it and then drove it 2000 miles a year. All of the miles were put on it recently. So Once you have a PPI done and a full service you should have no problem on any car you buy. Don't be scared of a low milage car. Just put money aside for the service. About $3500 to $4000.

I think 328's are only going up. I paid much more than the one on ebay for mine car. But mine is perfect 98 points at Cavallino. I paid a big premium for a low milage car and a rare car. There are only about 35 total 89 328 GTB's. So it is a rare car. I was offered a good profit for it at the show as well. But it is my baby and will not be sold.

Spend your time a do your research you will come across the right car. 328 GTS are not that tough to find a nice one. 89's might be a little tougher but worth the extra money they demand.

    Good luck

According to the dealer there was a recent service....10 years ago. Also carfax reports inconsistent odometer readings.

watry - I'll check the gold one out, but prefer red for resale and have always loved black cars - I have two right now.

forget inconsistent odo readings - I plan on keeping the car for quite some time and want proper history - that way when I maintain the car I can view it as and investment (even if its not) my way of justification.

I also paid more, though the '89 cars sell for more than mine; it was also an FCA show winner recently.

While I'm sure you can buy a good running 328 in the low $40K range, to some extent you do get what you pay for. It doesn't take that many "little projects" before you've eaten the cost savings on a lower priced car that "looked great except for some interior trim, a couple of broken switches and some scratches on the rear deck."

Like Rich, I was very particular about what I wanted (in my case a rare color, top condition, originality; although I prefer the GTS to the GTB). I did a reality check on the price plus due service costs, but I was hunting for the right car more than the right deal.

When I shop for my daily drivers, obviously it's another story: price, price and price.
