Does anyone know what the stock material or fabric that was used on the underside of the front bonnet? Mine is completely gone and I want to replace. Is it a leather look fabric or real leather or headliner fabric.......?

on my 512TR it is a perforated vinyl material with sound deadening sponge membrane. After years of heat changes etc. it dries out and just makes a mess of the Bonnett. Use the old material (if you still have it) for a template, source the vinyl from a local fabric/car/auto shop and use an adhesive that is not moisture or temperature sensitive, it will look good as new.....

Mine (an "87) has the same problem. The biggest obstacles I can see to overcome are as follows:

First is how to remove the old foam backing residue that is still glued to the hood. Any ideas?

Second is that the material is so much larger (area wise) than the area where it needs to be reattached. Granted I could just as well trim the material to a more appropriate size, but still the trick will be.. ........How to get the material "tucked" inbetween the hood and the bracing! Again, any ideas?

    Dear Ferraristi,

I tackled that area a few years ago.

To remove the glue backing, use 3M Wax and Tar remover....spray form....not liquid in can. Spray saturate an area you are working on and rub off with lots of cut up old T shirts.

I have the old vinyl in a box but didn't use a replacement. As mentioned, with all the heat / cool cycling, nothing will stay on for long. What I did was to remove the old surface and mask everything off to death and respray in OEM trim black in about a ga-zillion light mist coats. Years later, it still looks like new....looks the way it should have come from the factory.

...no new help for my questions in my Bolt thread?

I have already done the re fabric but it fell off like Shamile said. I think I used the wrong material the first time.

It needs to be a foam backed material.

Kerry, it was not that hard to tuck the material, I used a plastic Bondo spreader and some other stuff to slip behind the bracing.
The residual glue was not really a problem, I sanded and made sure it was even and the new contact cement kind of melted the old and in was un-noticeable when the material was installed. To bad my first attempt failed and fell off. I need to get the correct material this time or paint like Shamile did.

Robbie.............we would put up some pics but everyones material under the front bonnet is gone!

Make sure you don't use the standard 3M type adhesive. I found out the hard way on a headliner, while driving!.

There is a special "high heat" aerosol glue that will withstand the heat of a summer day without letting go. An upholstery shop should be able to point you in the right direction.
