I am trying to get my 1989 328 ready to enter the concours at Cavallino in January, and one item I would like to correct is a non=original air intake hose. The 1989 328 air intake was a one year only part with a rubber foam coating that tends to disintegrate and Ferrari no longer makes the part. I have read the threads on how to recover original 89 intakes if the foam is bad, but I no longer have the original 89 intake. Any ideas where to get one or how to make one? If I make one, I have to start from scratch as I do not have the plastic sleeves on each end nor the hard inner tube.

There were two types of intake hose used on 89 Euro 328s. One was a type specified for Swiss cars (133152) but several UK cars have it, which was made of a fabric type material, covered in foam, with neat end pieces covering the ends of the foam.

The other type p/n 136008 (which I assume they used after they ran out of the first ones) was simply the same hose as the oil cooler intake hose on the other side, with a foam covering. This hose (without the covering) is still available. The covering can be purchased, foam pipe lagging. This type is not as neat as the first as it has no covers on the ends of the foam.

Cars before 78069 used another type without foam (114019).

Do the pre-1989 hoses have a different construction - different than the wire-mesh core and plastic end caps that the '89 has? If they're the same construction then it seems that re-covering a pre-'89 tube with something similar to the 1989 foam material would work.

Yes, pre-89's do not have the plastic end caps and wire mesh core. It is a much simpler design, basically a hose attached via regular clamps.

Has anyone put the earlier hose on their 1989 328? Seems a logical fix, if there isn't some mechanical difference (or Concours desire). Part 114019 is just the end; what about the rest to the intake (61299600 AIR DUCT)?

    Pre-1989 had the plastic hose/duct: Ferrari 328 (1985) Parts : Table 103 - BODY SHELL - INNER ELEMENTS and Ferrari 328 (1985) Parts : Table 15 - AIR INTAKE AND MANIFOLDS
1989 had the foam covered mesh with end caps, but three different part numbers: Ferrari 328 (1988) Parts : Table 104 - BODY SHELL - INNER ELEMENTS and Ferrari 328 (1988) Parts : Table 16 - AIR INTAKE AND MANIFOLDS

First two pics are the two parts needed for the earlier cars, last pic is the 1989 foam covered mesh with end caps.

Glenn, finding an original is pretty hard to do. There have been threads on here of restoring and recovering the original, but that has always been having something to start with. I don't think anyone has an original in good shape, because they just didn't last. I replaced mine with a piece of orange aircraft ducting, but that would get me kicked out of a Councours.

If it's concours you are interested in, then obviously it must be original or look original; if it's strictly function you care about, a non corrugated hose with clamps is better. The foam-covered mesh was for intake noise reduction due to a US requirement in '89 for a 3db reduction in engine noise from previous years. The foam-covered mesh provided the reduction in noise but it also has a more turbulent airflow due to the mesh. I'm NOT saying that makes ANY difference in performance at all but it is a poorer design as an air intake.

    I did.

When I bought my 89' I assumed that the prior owner had installed some home-made POS in place of a OEM hose. It was very badly deteriorated, so I replaced it with one from an 87'.

I was completely unaware that Ferrari had made the change until I read about it here on F-Chat.

Thats strange. My 89 has the duct which does not have end caps but also has part number 136008 marked on it. Here it is minus foam covering. Its the same as the one on the other side, to the oil cooler.
I thought the end cap one was 133152 but evidently not.

I think the 136008 is printed on the end cap only, but I don't know if it was ever a separate part or referred to the whole hose with two caps assembly. Your hose between the caps looks like it may have been replaced/improved and re-installed into the end caps. I like it better than the original and better than what I have.

I think that 133152 is the small plastic sleeve used with the plastic intake part on non-89 cars. Early US cars used 114019, and 13352 is for the European cars in the quote below. Another F-chatter, DGS, posted this awhile back, "According to the '88 spare parts catalogue, the break point is car number 78069 which uses the 136008 part; the older ones would use 114019 (except 87 and 88 Swiss and 88 Austrian models which use 133152)."

Which all sort of summarizes what you said in Post #2...

I don't recall any issues. I'll run over to the garage and take a pic and post it up shortly.

    Your welcome.

Easy project - probably take less than half an hour after you find the parts. Good luck!

On mine 136008 is printed on the end but its one whole piece, the ends of the hose are molded together with the hose.
When I bought the car it had the dreaded foam covering in poor state but no end caps so the ends of the foam were visible.
I replaced the foam with a piece of pipe lagging which just about fits over the hose but is not 100% correct as the wall thickness of the pipe lagging is thicker than the original foam but its OK. I had to leave off the hidden part of the foam as it wouldnt go into the space.
I found some end caps (actually vent pipe reducers!) which are reasonably close to the ones on the version with end caps although it seems my car (and several other UK 328s I have seen) didnt have them.

If that supplier still has any, or even if they only have the end caps I would be interested in doing a better job.

BTW what do you have on the oil cooler? According to the parts list this should be the same, 136008.

Mine is an October 88 registered ABS car and it has the later hoses with end caps so maybe it was all ABS cars, not just 89 cars.

These hoses are a bit of a nightmare when they get older - the foam inner ends up in the air filter so I suspect most of them would have been replaced by now.

In that photo it is the early intake hose and lower duct. One will not work without the other and if memory serves the early lower duct will not fit without some modifications.

There is a very cheap Dayco duct hose available that fits the late cars perfectly.

I know the maker of the Seneca hose. It is a beautiful piece but very expensive. Even in a concours I cannot see a Dayco hose costing more than a point.

I think this is a great example of the different countries and different years getting lots of variations. I like the tubing on yours the most - black, not wire mesh, looks good. I would leave the foam off, since all it does is suppress noise. Just be careful it doesn't rub any lines.

On my oil cooler side, I have a hard plastic piece, which I think is #62468500. Wish the air intake side was the same and not the foam/mesh thing. But, I am going to convert it to the hard plastic of the earlier cars.

Here is what I swapped between the end caps. Aircraft ducting squeezed into the two end caps and wriggled into place.

    Hi Brian,
Thanks for jumping in with your experience. Would you know what modifications might be needed and a direction on the Dayco hose? Maybe one of these:
    http://www.daycoproducts.com/dayco%C2%AE-super-vent%C2%AE-hose)
    http://www.daycoproducts.com/dayco%C2%AE-autoflex%C2%AE-defroster-duct-hose

I may pursue the retro-fit of the earlier pieces if it isn't too much. John seems to have knocked it out pretty easily.

You see my function-over-form orange ducting.

It's been about six years since I did the swap. I don't recall doing any mods to make it work. If it will help, I will pull it out of the car tomorrow (or Thursday) and post some more pictures.

My memory is suspect. Hope I haven't misled you Mule. I will take it apart and post what I find ASAP.

If you want to go through all that, I would appreciate it, but don't make it too much of a science project just for me. I assume it all comes out of the top, with no wheel removal?
