All I have in my files is that it was for sale at Hemmings, New York, with the same mileage in 2012.

    Sorry

Hmm, wonder if they'd trade me even for my 32k mile '89? Per what has often been stated here, my 328 is better and worth more because it's been regularly driven/serviced! The seller should jump on that deal!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :)

What a waste if you ask me. I try to get my 89 out every week because that is what makes it "worth it" to me.

Any record of who purchased the car? If so, please ping me offline.

No: nothing at all in 27 years.
The mileage on this odometer are only the test miles done by the factory team of drivers the day the car left the factory, to test it on the roads around Maranello, always on the same itinerary; these test miles vary between 60 and 100 miles (100 to 160 kms) depending on the "loop" of roads used. The traditional "circuit" was Maranello to Pozza, then to Serramazzoni, and return to Maranello (ask "Alberto" about this...he lives near the factory).
I am suprised by the surprise here...it is a well known fact that a large number (more than 100) MY '89 328s were put "on the shelves" brand new after Enzo Ferrari's death. I have at least 25 by chassis number. These are now making their "coming out" due to the recent increase of values. Some are still waiting...

Do you know of any other models that have been mothballed around that time? F40's, 288 GTO's, Testarossa's??

There are "time capsule" cars for every model of Ferraris, but only in very small numbers, very rare occasions.

What made the 328 unique in that respect is a combination of two factors: it was known in 1988 that it was the end of the line for the 3x8 family and that it would be replaced in the summer of 1989; and then Enzo Ferrari died in August.

Many collectors, investors, would-be-investors and persons combining some of the three qualities in various percentages ordered MY '89 328s with the intention of shelving these, and selling these "zero miles" cars later, when the prices would have rocketed (upwards, that is...). Some MY '89 Testarossas as well, but not many; the 328 was particularly affected.

We all know that after a surge upwards, the prices rocketed downwards during the nineties and those "collectors/investors/would be investors" were stuck with "would be assets" that turned liabilities...

A brand new 328 GTS with usual options sold for 445.000 francs in 1989 in France; those 445.000 francs were more or less 115.000 euros of 2012. The logic therefore would have commended that as soon as the market would be valuating a "time capsule" at about 115.000 euros, the european one would reappear. And, for instance, 83117, a swiss-market car with only delivery miles, reappeared in 2012 at an asked price of: 120.000 euros...
But some were traded before, in relative discretion, for instance 82112, a "brand new" GTB with 160kms / 100 delivery miles on the odo (engine number 18678) which was sold in 2010 here in Paris, to a Japanese collector (? at least that's what I was told).

I have a list of Time capsules by chassis number, I think I have already posted that one. There are still some cars missing from the list of "known 328s by VIN": their chassis number is known, but no-one has ever seen the car "in the flesh"; my guess is that some will continue to pop-up here and there in the years to come.

I think there was a third, bigger factor. The classic car asset bubble. It was pretty much at its peak in 1989 and started collapsing in 1990 iirc.

+1. Total waste by not driving it to enjoy what Ferrari is all about. My 89 328 GTS has 20K miles and I enjoyed every single mile.

I think 20,000km is a perfect user versus preservation range for a 1989 car. Shows its been driven but still really low kilometres for a 27 year old Ferrari.

So, does anyone have any recommendations as to how one can locate the current owner of the car?

This guy probably bought one to store and one to drive. If I could do that every time a new model comes out I would.

What about #81897, an "Euro" GTS in the US, Giallo over Black, that sold for a first time at an auction in the spring of 2015, and then was on E-Bay for ages?
But as it is "Euro", it is non-catalysed, so could be a P.TA if the car has to pass emission tests...

This is a repost from another thread, but I think the car deserves to be here. It has an interesting history...it WAS a time capsule from 1989 to 2004, but isn't anymore.
This proves that some time capsules are one day returned to where they belong.

The french "historic Ferrari dealer", Charles Pozzi, put two identical Giallo / Nero 328 GTS, this #81150 and #82094 (also without roof spoiler) aside "on a shelf" in 1989; these were only sold on the market in 2004, when the dealership changed ownership.

These two cars were true "time capsules", they had only the 160kms "delivery miles" on the odo at the time (2004). I test drove the second one in November 2012 by chance, it still had only 9.500 kms on the odo (6.000 miles) at that time. She was exactly like a brand new car.

Quoting myself and bumping this old thread...We can add another one to the list; Bertrand thinks there is enough eveidence to consider it might well be #80070, built in January 1989
Another one coming out of the blue and out of her shelf. Has been in private hands in Germany since new; grand total on the odometer: 514 kms, that is about 300 miles. Apparently never registered. No hole drilled for a plate.
Asking price is 199.000 euros. Look at the pics if you like a brand new, 30 year old 328.
