I sold mine on ebay, from a 1988 1/2 326 with 42,330 miles (replaced with a Tubi). Ebay buyers may not be the "end-all be-all" price setting appraisers of the world, but it's how I chose to dispose my muffler. I polished mine up, repainted the tips and sold it in June 05 for $257.50. Not many bids, so potentially not indicative of the market. Anyway, it's better than tripping over it! Hope this helps, A Hudson
I'd say the exact opposite (the bidding behavior was a clear indicator for this market -- there isn't one ). IME there is little demand for the late model stock F silencers if a lot of aftermarket options are available for that model. Seriously, I'd say a few hundred $ was quite fair, and you were lucky to find someone who even wanted it. Since I already have a near valueless stock US TR silencer, I, literally, would not accept another one even for free. JMO
Okay 91TR, you caught me in my feeble attempt to give a soft landing. You're right; little activity usually means little interest. Oddly, I had a few inquiries from - gulp - kit car builders. (Sorry, I mean "component" cars that are professionally built, definitely NOT a kit, but a hand assembled replicas that yada yada...) Seems the interest was for some mid engine configuration that would eventually mate up to the 328 silencer. For a brief and potentially beer-induced moment, I looked at the 328 muffler standing on end and thought it'd make a nice frame for a glass top table. It wouldn't have take much and my wife would've LOVED it. I bet it'd been a struggle just so she'd LET me keep it in the garage! Anyway, I hate 'giving' some of these old pieces away. Oh, and while we're on the subject, I've just ordered a new exhaust for my 996tt, so if anyone wants the stock exhaust system, it'd make a great table! Let the bidding begin! Adams Hudson
Stuff that everyone throws away eventually gets to be rare and expensive. (It all comes back to the argument about whether 328's will ever be collectible cars, I s'pose...)
Sorry if my post came across as a little critical -- I didn't mean it to be, and really think you did well with your sale. It's a little sad because these late model stock silencers are really quite well-made (if a little heavy), but they are just too soft acoustically. If I was Ron, I'd do like you -- put it on eBay for $50 (no reserve), hope for a few hundred $, and be happy just to get it out of the garage regardless of where the auction ends. More than once, I've seen people ask $1K~$1.5K for a late model stock F silencer which is just completely unrealistic IMO.
91TR, No apologies needed! You called it right on the money. Too bad the stock silencer can't be opened up and modified the way some other specialty tuners do with other exhausts. I agree, it was too wheezy for my tastes. It's also just as true that these parts will be 'gold' or relatively so in many years. I am among those who feel a 328 WILL be a collectible piece. I mean, just look at the darn thing. Don't get me started on muscle car prices. Still, I'd put the exhaust on ebay or the parts exchange and see what happens. You can take your family out to dinner with what you get for it; all in all not a bad exchange and it beats stumping your toes on it. Advice: Have it packed very well. Mine came apart in transit (I'd paid to have it packed) and dinged a tailpipe, which didn't exactly make the buyer's day.
Man, I just thought of the GREATEST thing you can do with your new found muffler loot: Get a Motovanti Intake tube! And you'll have money left over! Plus, if you hate it, I'll pay you full price back for it a year later. Try THAT with a muffler! Check out ebay item #8018432971. Have fun with your Ferrari.
Adams---watch selling your stuff in the thread sections unless you are a sponser--some of the guys here dont take to that to kindly---by the way I bought one of your intake pipes a few months ago on ebay--still looks great on the car...Maybe put a few in the ads section!!
285 Ferrari, Thanks for the heads up. I did NOT know that, so will honor the rules. Thanks again. No harm intended and apologies to any paid advertiser vendors who took offense. Good advice on the ads section. Have a great holiday to all!
