The Clutch in my 89 348TS needs to be replaced. I have been reading a couple of past threads for more info. My Question is......do I need to replace the flywheel at the same time?, or can I just replace the clutch?
Hi, Kevin; You don't need to do anything with the flywheel unless it is significantly scored or warped, or if the internal Kluber grease is leaking out. For the first step, just remove the clutch housing as described in many threads here. It can be done easily with no special tools, and without having the car in the air. The entire clutch assembly comes off as a unit. Then remove the pressure plate and disc from the flywheel. You may want to take some pictures or make some reference marks to help you put it back together, but it's pretty straightforward. The twin disc clutch is of course a bit more complicated than the single disc clutch. You don't need to remove the flywheel from the housing unless the flywheel needs servicing. If it isn't leaking the grease, great! Check for signs of cracks or overheating (blue spots) on the contact surface. You may only need to replace the disc and plate. Good luck! If the flywheel is seriously worn or damaged, they are grossly expensive to replace - somewhere around $3000, I think.
Hello Kevin. When I replaced my twin plate clutch in Feb this year, I had to remove the flywheel to machine the 'hot spots' from the face of it. That required me to make a special tool to remove the nut on the rear of the flywheel that bolts the flywheel into the pumpkin. Other than that, its very simple to remove and replace clutch as Miltonian posted. Dont hesitate to ask any more questions if you have issues doing the job. We will be more than happy to help you out mate.
Thanks for the help guys!! Some of the more recent posts discussed replacing the flywheel and at $2700 a pop.......that made me shaky especialy for a fist time clutch replacement!!!
You're telling me Kev................when my clutch pressure plate failed I was paranoid of an expensive fix. I made a few phone calls for a new clutch kit/TO bearing and the average was around AU$7500. I was shaking in my boots. This happened within the 1st 3 months of ownership. All went well as I got a race clutch made for me for cheap. The car has been great ever since.
