It's stopped working. I've not looked at it yet and I hear when it does it's not that good. This weekend I'll make certail the compressor kicks in and peek about for leaks.

I've read a few times about conversion to modern refrigerant as a means to, long term, moderate costs. Does this work well? I want to do it right.

A 134a conversion does not have to be very expensive. Lets assume 1.5 hours shop labor to evac & recharge. Maybe $60 worth of R134a, $69(?) retail conversion kit for the "fittings," and lets toss in $200 for a new receiver/dryer (always a good idea to replace) and labor to install that. Under $500 give or take. Lots of sportscar owners have gone that way.

Second choice? Maybe a drop in R12 replacement? Not many are excellent, but some are very good. Your looking at $60 total to top off the system with this replacement chemical.

But... You need to see if all of the parts are good. If it needs a compressor, then you may be in trouble. Time for more diagnoses as you noted.

I just had some A/C work done on my 89 348. I do not know if it uses the same compressor, but if it does, I got a replacement from a source in Texas for around $450. My mechanic says the R134 uses much higher pressure and does not recommend switching to it unless you have to.

Before replacing the compressor on a T, I recommend you check the following:

    1. belt tension. On my Mondial T the belt tension bolt had backed out and
eventually the other mounting bolts loosened as well. End result was
that the A/C would not blow cold at all.

    2. fuse box. Look for browning at the fuse box connector for the A/C
electrical feed. It is a common (dealer's do this also) repair to
rewire to an outside relay and avoid sending the higher current
    through the fusebox.

Lastly, over the years some of the ductwork under the dash can
pull loose and therefore not deliver full air flow where you want it.
I had spent some time remounting these, putting ducttape at all
areas where air could go astray (including the defrost vents inside
the door panels), and upgraded the main center dash vents to the
    nice unit made by STCorsa.

Even if this isn't your current problem, you may find it
    useful in the future.
